Little Birdie "News"

I didn't expect to be blogging this week. This is a time for family. But now we hear that Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky will be endorsing Naisy Dolar tomorrow. Rumors of Schakowsky's support have been frequent throughout the campaign, generally coming from the Dolar camp. One poster even thought it would be a good idea to threaten Schakowsky because she was supporting Dolar.

If true (and remember that lots of rumors have been posted here, some with less accuracy than others), it should sound the death knell for Ald. Stone. Schakowsky is widely respected in our community and is probably our best-loved politician. Her endorsement would be the seal of approval that opens the minds of many people here who were unwilling to let Berny go. It would prove to them that Dolar can "cut it" in the city council.

Perhaps the most important thing is that Schakowsky has the finest political mind in the area. She wouldn't go back on her word to Stone (who asked her to stay neutral in the race) unless she firmly believed that Dolar would win. In the end, Schakowsky has the people to turn the tide on the ground. I don't believe that she would endorse anyone in a race like this unless she was committed to putting her supporters to work.

  1. If Jan Schakowsky does endorse, what makes you think it would be more than in name only? Her political director is working for Joe Moore, isn't he? So what supporters could be mobilized for Naisy that aren't already working for Moore?

The biggest benefit to Naisy would probably be in fundraising to pay for the extra mail. But will the mail be effective in getting voters to the polls? I think that at this point it's no longer about persuasion, it's all about turnout.

  2. Yesterday I got three, yes three mailers all from the SEIU PAC once again blasting baseless charges tell you not to vote for Stone.

Great Bulk mailing system to get them all in one day. They will be sitting on the bottom of my bird cage for the next few weeks. Geat use of union dues as well. Thanks SEIU

  6. So its good news that Jan Schakowsky of Evanston is sticking her poltical nose into Chicago. True she may represent the 50th ward in congress but not locally.

When ( I said when not if) Stone wins on April 17, it will be bad news for her if this rumor is true when she is up for reelection next year.

  7. It will be nice when we finally get someone who represents us locally.

  9. "Jan Schakowsky of Evanston is sticking her poltical nose into Chicago ... it will be bad news for her ... when she is up for reelection next year."

I'm always amused by this kind of reasoning that tries to have it both ways. Jan Schakowsky has no say in the 50th Ward, but we will decide her fate at election time.

Behold the great and powerful Berny Stone. Pay no attention to the old man behind the curtain.

  10. When you say "baseless" chareges, they are what exactly? There are a lot of things to say against Stone and they include development issues, safety, failing to help public schools in his area by being their advocate like other alderman. I'm not a SEIU member but its members can vote out those who decided to spend money on the mailers. Just like we can vote out Stone!

  15. Jan Schakowsky has been trying to influence the 50th ward local canidates since she was first elected to congress back in 1998. She want her Canidate for Alderman, Democratic Ward Committeeman and possible even State Representative

The baseless charges is the crap that comes on these SEIU mailers. They are half truth and some so old and false.

As for schools, look at Boone and the others that have new facilities. There is no one in the city council that knows more about zoning and the Building Code that Stone. So dont talk about developement issues. If you think we have a safety issue here fel free to go 79th and Western any evening

SEIU may have some members in this ward but not enough to effect the ourcome.

Besides IBEW 134, Plumbers Local 130 etc do support stone and they vote and provide workers and money.

  17. Hope you all watched Naisy on Channel 11 the other night. Phil Ponce did a great job. Naisy really couldn’t give a good answer to his questions. Why is Devon so crowded if it’s doing so badly?? What’s up with the crime/ safety, its down in the 50th, Naisy replies people don’t report it, LOL. I would think she would be better prepared. Personally I don’t think she did well at all. She had no facts to back herself up.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Alderman Stone's answers to Phil Ponce were lacking of any substance. Just like the service we receive in the ward under his extended tenure.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yes I saw the show. Stone didn’t have to be there, Naisy stepped on her toes left and right. I agree Phil Ponce did a Great Job. Naisy answered the questions very poorly and should have been better prepared, or does not know how a ward should be run. All I hear is safety and poor quality of life. I sure don’t think we live in the dumps. Maybe Naisy should visit some other wards in the city where less fortunate people and lower income families live. Then tell us in the 50th we live a poor quality of life.

If I were Naisy I wouldn’t want to replay the WTTW11's Chicago Tonight interview with Phil Ponce. Naisy’s presentation was terrible and was made a fool of. I read an earlier post about the crime and after watching the replay had to laugh myself. WHY wouldn’t you call the police if there was a burglary at your home?? Naisy couldn’t even come up with a good response to Devon Ave after Phil said it looks pretty crowded. Pretty sad if you ask me, and she posted it on her web site. Maybe she needs to watch it again to see all her mistakes.

  27. Boone has a new facility? And that is? Boone does not have a new facility yet. I won't believe after fighting for a new school for 10 years, that a new facility will be built until ground is broken. Your idea of a new facility is very loose indeed! Where is this facility? Can you give me the address? Boone and Clinton just have a promise that its being built after years of overcrowding - thousands (yes thousands considering the size of the schools and the years they've been overcowded) of kids from Boone and Clinton have had to put up with overcrowding and we don't have a new facility!

You still say nothing in specific about the "baseless charges" about SEIU so I don't take your charge seriously because you have presented no evidence yet.

So, we can't complain about safety until we're as bad as some neighborhoods? So you think reacting to a problem is best instead of a plan? You are definitely a Stone supporter!

I would also like to add that Stone's mailer, received today speaks of a new school and new parking garage implying that they have been built and they haven't. So you complain about SEIU?

Why don't you bring out some facts and evidence? Unless you have nothing but hot air.

  28. one doesn't have to spin to know Dolar was unprepared and making up phony issues on "CHICAGO TONIGHT" that people DO NOT report crime is absolutly an insult to one's intelligence. That residents should give up "Residential Permit Parking" is insane, especially since she fully knows a new garage is being built at Devon-Rockwell(She showed up at the Groundbreaking trying to steal credit for Stone's achievement)and than ignores that it is happening. She couldn't answer Phil Ponce"s questions and spent the show wigglying around in her seat, and she ADMITTED to running an Ethnic Crusadewhich is ,unfortunatly dividing the Ward.

    My Child goes to Boone!!!!

Second the MPR room at Boone/Play ground( Hello) The new school at Northshore and Whipple that willbe payed for by TIFF Money that was arrange by Stone. I sure if Naisy is elected (which wont happen) she will tand there an claim credit once it is completed.

Remember ther state was suppose to pay for the new school, but no money. So the TIFF money will be used.
Up till 8 months ago how was this ward divided? not until the campaign and all of the charges from Brewer and Dolar. Then the racial hate mail and grafitti. Old and lets add he to old( age issues as well) I agree on the age issue, Dolar is to young(LOL).

Show me one negative campaign piece from Stone in the primary>>You cant. However now the glove are comming off.

One final point about Boone. I like their staff and unlike some parents who just complain, I got involved at Boone. Just like the campaign, I dont complain I get involved.

As for SEIU there members cant come to work, so they get laid off and then the union complain....However the real union, Plumbers, IBEW support a winner in Stone.

  34. Helo? The MPR is 10 years old! And I truely don't know if Stone had anything to do with it. That's new? We need a new schol and he did nothing for us until recently but yell at us about a new addition! The playground. What exactly did Stone have to do with that? I can assure you that he had very little to nothing whatsoever to do with the new playground! He thought we had one when we didn't? How does that show you how much interest he has in Boone. He had no idea that we didn't have a playground before the one we have now (really brought to us by the work of a Boone parent) I have no idea where you get your information but it is wrong.

I didn't say that Stone said anything negative but he has a loose way of giving himself credit for a new shool and a parking garge neither of which are close to being built. He didn't work very hard to help us get funding for a new school (parents, and I was one of them, have had to push and push and push to get anything (KINS for example). Now my son, who is in eighth grade has had to attend an overcrowded school the entire time he has been in elementary school. And so many others have to attend an over crowded school. And that is because we have never had a strong advocate in our alderman.

As far as being involved at Boone -I have been very involved at Boone from many years and continue to be since I have two kids. I'm glad you are an involved parent but you must get your facts straight. And Stone was at first taking credit for the nonexistent new library at Boone until a Boone parent called him and set him straight.

Also, what have you done about getting a new school and overcrowding? Anything? Do you volunteer? Do you attend LSC meetings? How are you involved?

SEIU is the most successful union out there now - they are growing unlike most unions including mine. Boy, you must check you facts. I note that you still haven't answered my original question - what exactly was wrong with the SEIU flyer regarding incorrect information? By your silence on that I'm beginning to believe you have no idea.

SEIU Stone steers city busines to car rental company owened by son in law-WRONG

Stone changes zononglaw to help out friends( coded message) besides that change is available to everyone in Chicago.

Fact in 2003 city informs SEIU Local that they might outsource city jobs since their members average 25% absenteeism every day sndevery shift. City and union negotiate for close to year. They reach an agreement which rewards employee who show up and take away from those who dont. The union tells city it is a done deal, no need for membership approval. That same night union members, some with the worst attendance records and some who did not go to work that day ( but can go to the union meeting)force the union to reject the agreement.

The next day the inform city the agreement is null, so city outsources the jobs. And SEIU is mad about that. Blame themselves.

    Its called bath faith bargaining.

  36. Friends of Boone gets the vast majority of its money from hard fund rasiing efforts not the alderman. Friends of Boone got in touch with the Arne Duncan and got Boone at the top of the list for the playground - Stone didnt' do that although he could have if he cared enough and was aware of the problems Boone has faced for many years. How much money does Stone get for Boone? (Hint: Ira Silverstein was able to help with $5000 not Stone). Did Stone help out with the Greg Trooper concert two weeks ago? Only with parking on the north side of Lunt. Does Stone sell or even buy the Krispy Kremes that Boone sells? Friends of Boone does that without his help. Is Stone helping with the upcoming carnival? Is Stone buying or selling Boone t-shirts and sweatshirts? That's where Friends of Boone gets most of the money. Are you helping out with the fundrasiers? If Stone has given money to friends of Boone it is only because Friends of Boone has been to see him many times to tell him what Boone needs not the alderman actively trying to help the school. Stone didn't even know Boone didn't have a play ground until Friends of Boone told him! How long has he been alderman? How much has he given to Friends of Boone if you say that he has given money? How much? When? How many times did Friends of Boone have to visit him until it got the money? How many times have I visited him and been to rallies to talk about a new school and had him yell that we should just accept an addition? Some of us have been there too many times to say that he has done much for Boone. This is not even talking about what he did many years ago with regard to the Greene school. He screwed public school kids with his work on that!

About SEIU - I found your information confusing but won't say they are wrong until I check the facts. At least you responded with some specifics. However, since you appear to be a Stone mouthpiece instead of neutral advocate for Boone, I question where you are getting your information. Perhaps from Stone? How about a neutral party? Ever consider that?

As someone who has worked in non profits for the better, ever heard of networking??? From other non profits contact.. By the way Ira Silverstein Supports Stone for re-election.

Here is one for you, former student that attended Boone was a prime suspect in a crime. The victim new the students name but not where they lived. CPD could not locate the student but he could have been arrested at school.

However when the victim alert this problem to Alderman Stone, the Alderman had an idea to check voter registration rolls. So on A sunday morning at 9AM ,one of his staff staring going through the rolls and found the information. The student was arrested at home the following day but not at school to avoid any issues. (Thats what experiece does)

These are the stories you never hear about. As for a mouth piece for Stone, no just a citizen who appreciate what he does such as special olympics every fall at misericordia.

    ReplyDelete
  38. That's news that Silversteing supports Stone? So? What does that have to do with money given to Friends of Boone?

It takes experience to check registration records? Please! It takes a brain! In 34 years Stone should be able to have that idea! I never said he wasn't smart but he's not an advocate for Boone. And if you looked at the history you would have to agree. The history not Stone's version of it.

The 49th has a new school and a new public library. The near west side near UIC - what a great area that is now. Look at Devon! Empty storefronts! And Stone has his posters in so many empty storefronts! That should tell you something.

I have things to do. I'm sure you do to. This is a waste of time.

When you come up with those figures on how much Stone has given to Friends of Boone write in. I will also find out the facts. And please come up with some facts!

One issue floating beneath the political radar screen is the March 10, 2004 indictment of Schakowsky’s husband, Bob Creamer, on 36 counts of bank fraud. According to the complaint, Creamer, as executive director of a group called Illinois Public Action, masterminded a check-kiting scheme which caused over-drafts exceeding $2.3 million in 1997. The indictment also alleges that Creamer failed to withhold $300,000 in federal income taxes for his employees, and filed false personal income tax returns –which were filed jointly with his wife.

YOU CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS. I know Naisy will hold public meetings and ask each person in the Ward should we have a new and bigger and better walgreens that will have a doctors off and wher should it be located.

YOU CANT HAVE IT BOTH WAYS. you want business or you dont. I can understand like a bar or gun store or porn shop but yo cant pick and choose over a drug store.

It is amazing seeing people who back Stone and the old Chicago guard/machine talk about someone else as a criminal. That's pretty haliarious! Really now, it's what Chicago politicians are known for! Look at all those folks connected with Daley going to prison. And you think Creamer's check kiting is worth talking about? He hurt himself but no on else with that behavior. Not excusable but hardly much given Chicago tradition. And do you always know what your spouse is doing all the time? Really?

    April 05, 2007 8:

So it alright to complain about all those city officials who have gone to jail of late but it not alright to tak about our congresswoman husband who stole from a non profit...YOU CANT HAVE IT BOTH WAYS. So where was Jan when Hubby was writing the checks?

But wait you can have both ways because according to most blogs on this site everything in the 50th ward is Stone fault but he is not responsible for anything good or positive in the Ward.

  63. So we need more banks? Based on...? Is that the only community devlopment you are interested in? Must be.

And who's complaining about corrupt officials? The point was you are so upset about Jan's husband but don't see your own hypocrisy here. So you think that Jan should have been at her husband's side watching him write checks while he was at work instead of being at her job. So she should have known what he was doing while he was at work and she wasn't there! Well then so should Lura Lynn Ryan, whose husband was actually responsible for the death of six children, and Scooter Libby's wife for his lies! Let's make all the spouses responsbilty for their spouses misdeeds! That makes so much sense, dont' you think?

And our alderman is supposed to be the leader of our community. That is what he is elected to do. Not just react when someone comes in with a problem. He hasn't had a good idea in a long time.

It called market forces.. Wait yuo dont want empty stores but then you want to choose who can do business in those stores. You cant have it both ways.I like alotof things around me in area but you take what you get.I am a landlord of a commercial building way out in the burbs. When I have a vacany I look at a potential tenant ability to pay the rent. I dont care if it is a shoe store, hair salon or loan office. I look at credit history and any build out cost.

Scooter Libby's can go to jail to if you like. We do have a good leader already in Stone.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Leader? In what?

You really meant to say that we have a good sleeper in Stone, didn't you?

personally, I can't think of a single example where Bernie Stone has acted like or been considered a leader, in the ward or in the city. The best I think you could say about Stone is that he has great entertainment value. If you're honest, you'd have to admit that Naisy has demonstrated more leadership qualities than Stone has for more than a decade.

    ReplyDelete
  66. If you thin Stone is a good leader I suggest you check your dictionary. You also need to check it for your spelling.

What good wards have is a mixture of development - not just banks. If you're satisfied with the way things are then you might want to move on in the next few years. Stone might not be defeated this time but it will be very close either way. However, his time as alderman is closing and he should take stock if he wins this time. There is overwhelming dissatisfaction in this ward and it will bite Stone now or soon because he's living in the past (as it appears you are). The ward is moving on.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I have not seen Daisy lead us anywhere.. Nor do I see her lead us in the future. I have seen streets repaved, new sewers installed, also the new street lighting look great. Just because it may not have hit your neighborhood does not mean Stone is not improving the ward. I don’t have these new streetlights yet but all good things take time, and cost money. All you bashers keep doing is putting on those Dark glasses and don’t see the positive being done in the ward. Again it can’t always be in your front yard since we do have a big ward.

  69. I believe that Stone was caught napping during this current aldermanic term. His reputation, though, is that he falls asleep at almost every meeting, sometimes even snoring. 78. Willow's comments are strikingly similar to those put forth in support of Dolar by the editor of a little local rag called the Asian-American Community Builder.

I wish more voters could see the extent to which Dolar's backers have reduced this election to a question of Race and Race alone.

The Philipino Editor of that sheet glowingly endorses Dolar in the latest issue (p. 4)and argues that non-whites should mobilize to toss out the white alderman.

He cites reams of racial statistics, crunches numbers and concludes that all non-whites united could achieve that noble end.

If David Duke made such an appeal he'd be dismissed and laughed out of the debate. But apparently it is OK for noble-minded radical multiculturalists to talk about non-white racial supremacy behind a smoke screen of getting the litter off of Devon Ave.

The ICIRR and the other race obsessed characters who animate Dolar's effort are no less dangerous than the Ku Kluxers who once dominated the politics of Southern Indiana.

    They must be stopped.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Anon.1:23 hit it right on the head.Dolar is running an openly racial campaign and then in a fashion typical of her and her campaign tries to have it both ways by accusing those who spotlight this obvious fact as hate-mongers. 84. A few thoughts....

    1) First I think Dolar still has a chance to pull out a victory over Stone. I was surprised today to find more religious Jews, like myself, who are supporting Dolar and admire the change she could bring to the 50th.

    2) If wanting a ward where good government is the norm, patronage a thing of the past, and reform the accepted direction makes me a "leftist/phony liberal" so be it. This is the tragedy of demagogues like Stone and their misguided supporters who, like George W Bush and the neo-cons, have to invalidate anyone who doesn't see things their way. Fortunately, I take my cue from Dietrich Bonhoeffer who once wrote, while imprisoned in a Nazi jail, "it may be that the day of judgment will come tomorrow and on that day I will gladly stop working for a better future, but not before!"

    3. I don't see why the hardline Stone partisans feel so threatened by the real prospect that we in the 50th Ward may have a new representative in the City Council after 17 April. Change is constant in history and we should embrace it and the new possibilities that might arise as a paradigm shifts!

I guess you have been in the box for a long time. The sewer project along Pratt between Western and Ridge took quite some time. This was a major project and not just in front of one house. LOL. It was also along the side streets there. Also new lighting was installed. Are you blind?? What about the sewer project on Rockwell and the newly re paved street. Did you loose site of this as well. I can go on but I know these for a fact as This was a route to work.

    ReplyDelete
  87. to anon.12:56- so,the gist of what you say is the Jewish Community should aid in the disrepresantion of itself, all in the interests of helping Dolar achieve her goal of fulfilling a Racial Crusade and become an Ethnic Heroine. There were people like you that made out train lists in Nazi Occupied Europe. Since you like to put labels to people, try this one on:Judenrat

    ReplyDelete
  88. Yes, because in our democracy, Jews couldn't possibly be represented well by anyone else!

    Try on this label: Idiot.

    ReplyDelete
  89. to anon.6:04-The same reasoning could be given about anyone or any group. What is Un-democratic is to run a racial/ethnic based campaign that is about one group's empowerment.Since Stone quite ably represents all of the 50th ward's residents, including the Asian community (whose members support Stone) Dolar's openly Ethnic/Racial campaign is an insult.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Why is it undemocratic for a group to want democratic representation? You seem to be saying that's what you want for your group. It's odd that you would argue that it is wrong for another group.

Perhaps your problem is with democracy, or rather, the potential results of democratic activity. You seem caught in between two slippery slopes, with nothing left but your own desired outcomes. But we wouldn't be having this conversation if Berny Stone had represented everyone in the ward. That's the crux of your problem.

    ReplyDelete
  91. To Anon.7:09-Another example of the Anti-Stone gang trying to have it both ways. You're saying that Dolar's ethnic/racial crusade is the embodiment of democracy, but the the community whose last municipal representative,s seat is the Dolar target is un-democratic in wanting to continue its representation. This twisted Left-Wing thinking is what threatens our country, and now threatens our ward,s future.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I hope stone supporters keep up this rhetoric while the Dolar supporters keep getting out the vote. Talk is cheap, stone is on the run and so are all his family members on the dole.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Oh, I see. Your problem is not just a logical fallacy, but the inability to comprehend a different argument. I'm not the one who wants to have it both ways. I pointed out that the crux of your argument is also your criticism of Naisy. That's not having it both ways, it's pointing out hypocrisy.

    April 05, 2007 12:30 PM

Here is fact Mr/Mrs. Boone School that was right in from of our faces.

You want new classroom as Boone but where would you put them? On the playground? Add a 4th floor that would cause the school to shutdown for a year to construct. I believe the choice was a MPR or class rooms? Any ways unless you want to put them on the playground there is no more room.

The new school you state took years to get funding and build. Soryy but Alderman Stone or Alderman Dolar, Brewer or anyone else cant click their heel and make a new school appear. However Alderman Stone did click his heel and a few years so now there is funding.

  102. I’ve had enough. To the political whores and hacks who have contributed to Ald. Stone’s campaign via the First C.D. Victory PAC and other financial vehicles/companies – will you hang around and contribute to clean up and improve our community should Stone win? I doubt it. To the aldermen and their support groups who gave money and manpower to Stone-will you have some police cars re-deployed from your ward to ours when it slides even further in decline with the gangs and other crimes? I think not...

Mayor Daley has made it abundantly clear that keeping Alderman Stone and his foul-mouthed, rude chief of staff (daughter Ilana) (with whatever political capital that means to him) in office overrides any needs or desires of the residents of the 50th Ward. Regardless of the state of decline that the ward is in, courtesy of Alderman Stone’s lack of leadership, planning, and advocating for us, Mayor Daley wants him re-elected. I’ve been approached on the street twice now by people from other wards sent by other aldermen to help Stone. When I asked them about Stone’s plans for the ward and why he is the better candidate I got, “He’s for safety….umm, better schools, things like that…can you tell me where Touhy is?” Articulate they are not. And Stone’s recent mail piece about safety and cameras is garbage when he could have used the funds from the aldermanic menu to purchase them (available beginning this year) and chose not to.

It would appear that Ms. Dolar is up against a mayor who cares only about the make-up of his city council; an alderman and his campaign manager who are not above using intimidation, dirty tricks, vandalism and worse to stay in office; and fellow aldermen who must owe Stone something to send bodies up here to help him. So here’s my idea – if you think Naisy Dolar deserves a fair shot at beating Ald. Stone – call her office at 773-508-6248 or go online www.naisydolar.com to help volunteer during this final week before the election and be sure to pass this on to your friends. Veteran campaigners who think a very well-qualified woman deserves a chance at taking on the Machine in its worst form should come join her team. Nonpartisan groups like the League of Women Voters and others should send in plenty of poll watchers on Election Day to ensure that voters are allowed to vote for the candidate of their choice without any intervention, intimidation, or “help” from unscrupulous people, be they election judges, poll watchers, and other Machine-related personnel.

As a resident of the 50th ward, while well aware that Chicago elections are less than pristine examples of democracy in action, I am disgusted by both the number of outsiders and the Mayor and other aldermen who seek to unfairly alter the outcome of this race with their money, clout, and manpower in spite of the well-documented need for change, revitalization, and new leadership in the ward. Please help Ms. Dolar and level the playing field – if not completely – at least more so than it is now.

You certainly don't see your own hypocrisy. But that is no surprise, you are a Stone supporter, which is all one needs to know.
