Signs that Stone Runs Scared

Seven months ago, Ald. Stone wrote a Letter to the Editor of the Chicago Reader. In his normally arrogant tone, he invited Greg Brewer into the race for Alderman: "Come on in—the water is fine." Seems he wished he could rescind that invitation.

Friday I drove past the Brewer headquarters at Lunt and Western. There are Stone signs plastered all over that building. One empty storefront screams, "I'm scared, Mr. Brewer! Go away!"

But I'm betting the message is aimed more at Brewer's supporters (and the voters in the 50th) than anything else. That's our Berny. If you don't love him, he wants you to fear him. Very scared is even better. It's an old mob thing. He's all about intimidation. Thus his blatant attempt at public humiliation. Or so they think.

For comparison, this morning I drove by Salman's and Naisy's headquarters. No real sign of Stone activity. The empty storefront near Naisy's has a "For Rent" sign, but no Standing with Stone, no signs that express Stone's need to intimidate Naisy's supporters. They pose no threat to him.

Stone is clearly scared of Greg Brewer. So buck up, Brewer supporters! The recent additions around your campaign office should be viewed as an indicator that you've gotten under Berny's skin. He's scared. He's feeling cornered. He knows that Brewer is his only real competition, and he continues to show that month after month.

If you haven't seen the "I'm scared" Stone signs, you should take a look. It's a hoot. Everyone will laugh by how scared Stone and his supporters are acting. Then we should do everything we can do make Berny's fears of losing real.

The signs you refer to are all over the ward not just in the three areas you talk about JS!!!!! Just like the other canidates. Just like Ward 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12.....28, 29, 30....45, 46, 47, 48, 49. Just drive around the city.

Wow! The Naisy fans are really desperate! I can understand. Neither SEIU nor Ald. Stone think she's a credible candidate. I guess we can add the CFL to the list as well. It must be frustrating for you.

Are there signs in the building that Naisy has her campaign office? No. Is there an empty store front? Yes. There is a Stone sign across the street, half a block away. One sign. But, if you like, you can compare that one sign to the number of signs around Brewer's campaign headquarters as an indicator of who Stone fears. What is it? 15 to 1 for Brewer? 20 to 1? 30 to 1?

When you stop being emotional, you might want to take a hard look at this race. That is, if you really want to see Stone beaten, like I do. Naisy doesn't cut it. Stone knows that he can crush her. Brewer is his only real competition, and the machine will do everything they can to keep Brewer down.

Naisy poses no threat to Stone. That's not just my assessment, there's plenty of evidence out there that it is widely shared.

I see a sign from you blog of double standards for everyone except Brewer. So Brewer's sign son Kedzie along the fence North of Touhy( by the way are notlegally placed and technically in Skokie) are meant to intimidate no one?

I'm sorry, I don't understand your question. I'm not suggesting that signs are always intended to intimidate. For example, I don't think Naisy's signs are placed in the attempt to intimidate anyone. I am speculating (based on my run-ins with Ald. Stone) that Stone placed those signs mentioned in my post in the attempt to intimidate Brewer and his supporters.

Do you have any indicators that Stone is attempting to intimidate Naisy's supporters?

Wow, it sure does look like Stone is scared all over the neighborhood. I've never seen him put so many signs up like that. Not for years and years.

Every election, every canidate has sign everwhere. Some how now its intimidation? or running scared?

Do any of you travel outside of the 50th ward ever? There are aldermanic signes every where just like every 4 years

I've been in quite a few wards in the past week (about 10). Not one is blanketed with signs like the 50th. In the 42nd (Natarus), you can hardly find a sign for the incumbent, and that's supposed to be as competitive as the 50th. There are some, but few and far between.

What ward do you think has as much activity as the 50th? What ward has the incumbent virtually blanketed the ward? Perhaps we travel in different areas.

Uncle Berny isn't afraid of anyone. Cousin Ilana isn't afraid if anyone either. If your concern is sign to office proximity, then that's another reason why we are unbeatable.

I don't know, Favored One. The fact that Berny is negotiating with the machine to bring in additional help tells me he's scared. The fact that he's having to suck up to the rabbinical council says that, too.

Berny's losing his hold on the ward. There's no chance that Ilana could win, and you know it. You'd have a better chance than her. True, Naisy's presence in the race probably does help Berny's re-election.

Anonymous: Outside of 2, which has lots of challengers, the wards you cite have only nominal competition to the incumbent. My comparison to 42 is a much closer analogy.

Uncle Berny doesn't have to ask for help from the machine. First off, he has the Jewish precincts locked up. Greg, Naisy, and Salmon are fighting for just 30% of the vote. It wouldn't matter if there was one or 20 candidates in this race. No Jewish vote = No Win.

And it looks like the calvary won't be coming to save Brewer et al. SEUI is staying out.

Two more years until Pax Ilana!

I have to agree with that last blogger. Without the Jewish vote, the 50th is locked up for Stone to win. I hope that in the next two years, people can provide a solid front runner for the 50th instead of the circus that's been happening this year.

and why do u assume that the jewish community is just going to automatically vote for Bernie? The jewish community has countless reasons to be angry with Stone, and the fact is that with the high turnover in the ward (which includes Jews) his old block just isnt there anymore, at least not in the force that it once was. These new young jewish couples, some the kids of his old guards who have passed on, only see an old man who's past his prime and wants to subvert our democracy by planting his daughter after he's elected. By no means is the Jewish community a lock for Stone, far from it.

Until you can provide proof that Brewer or Naisy have made inroads into the Jewish community, consider it locked. The few not satisfied with Stone will just not vote rather than vote against one of their own.

Salmon being a Muslim makes him a non-factor in three quarters of the ward.

And by the way, i take offense to you calling me a bigot, especially since I'm latino, and Brewer has been actively reaching out to ALL members of the community. In fact, he's even got some spanish speakers on his team specifically for those households that have trouble with english, of which there is a considerable amount. But Berny wouldnt know anything about that cause he just tells them that O'Connor is their alderman so he doesnt have to deal with them. Who's the real bigot? thats what i thought.

Isn't it ironic that you post as anonymous (which most people do, given their fear and loathing of our alderman) while criticizing someone for posting as anonymous?

What a dillema. I am a young guy, having grown up in the ward, lived here my entire life. I am really looking to get active and campaigning for a candidate this last month where it matters the most. I'm sure the campaigns are always looking for young energized individuals.

But......reading these blogs, confusing the heck out of me! There is just a barrage of hate campaigning going on.

Anyone want to provide proper facts on who the best candidate is? My family knows Bernie Stone, I am Asian, he isn't as bad as people make him out to be. Brewer and Dolar seem to be the most viable opposition Bernie has gotten in a long time. Although I lean toward Stone due to familiarity and I have seen his work and progress, these new candidates intrigue me.

Well some educated answers please, and yes I am a college graduate so not illiterate lol nor a bigot :)

The D2s are now available - is the Brewer campaign $85,000 in debt? How are they going to pay that back?

Greg Brewer was last (behind Salman Aftab!)in contributions, will the unions give him more money after they see those numbers?
