Stone Betrays Business, Again

In an earlier post, I wrote about Ald. Stone's corrupt practice of delaying the opening of a proposed business while the businessman paid rent on the property so that campaign signs for the alderman could be displayed during the election. The rational for this seemed to be because Stone didn't want to push through an unnecessary, but controversial, zoning change at the height of the campaign.

Now we get word that Stone will oppose the zoning change and will recommend that the businessman withdraw the zoning request. Five months after the businessman "cut a deal" with the alderman. Five months of rent paid for empty space.

We sometimes wonder why the 50th Ward gets passed over by new businesses like grocery stores, retail chains, coffee shops and small boutiques. But Stone's using of a small businessman this way, misleading him, enducing a "favor" from him, taking control of his property, and then abandoning him after Stone no longer needs him, can only contribute to this. It surely can't help.

You can't trust Stone. Period.

Not only does Stone have a history of misleading people, such as his recommendation that the business required a zoning change in the first place, but he has a history of not keeping his promises.

Another businessman has now learned this lesson about our alderman. And he is poorer for it.

Granted, the alderman could still decide to grant a special exemption that will allow the proposed Tattoo Parlor to open. You just never know. Because you can't trust Berny Stone. You just can't.

If you have any evidence of wrongdoing, you should go to the state's attorney. All this talk about corrupt practices and favors is totally unfounded.

Besides, an illegal contract is unenforceable and I'm sure Stone gave the money back.

This is another one of Jays stories. No facts here just word of mouth. Yes you have to get zoned for a tattoo parlor if zoning is not there also get the community input which Bernie did. I dont see Bernie making a promise of a tattoo parlor without the community input, which was the final word.Jay again get the story straight, your pulling at straws again. I dont see the person coming forward who claims to be cheated out of anything. Where are you getting your information from if this is true?

No facts? Anyone who drove up Western saw that signs. There was a "for rent" sign in the window in December. Got taken down around the timne Jay said.

Jay's story makes more sense than anything else. I can't think of a reason why a business would rent space and keep it empty for five months, or put up signs for a candidate in the middle of a heated election. There has to be a reason. We see the lack of new businesses on Western and Touhy. Stone's to blame somehow, whether he is too demanding or too negligent. Both should benefit from the traffic to Devon, but they don't.

At May 30, 2007 12:19 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Still No Facts. So a for rent sign came down that does not tell me shit. Nor do the false statements made here. You can't open a store without being properly zoned for it and the community should agree. Are you against the community input?
If so then the tattoo shop should go in then we have 1 less empty store front.

Can anyone provide another explanation for why someone would rent space for five months, keep silent about it for four, and only start the process for opening a business in the fifth month? This is fishy, and more needs to be written about it.

BTW, there is new business development in the 50th. Not Touhy or Western, but Lincoln and McCormick is thriving.

And furthermore, as a citizen of the 50th Ward I am sick of these things as well:

1) Russian Jewish immigrants, now prosperous thanks to the public assistance aid American Jews like myself gave them through the JUF, sitting in their Winston Tower condos praising Michael Savage and opposing a Canadian style national health service because "hard working people shouldn't have to help lazy blacks." (This is a verbatim quote from one!)

2) The Editor of "Israelnews" who told me that Bernard Stone deserved re-election because the 50th Ward needed an Alderman with a "mezzuzah on his office door" and because "our leaders told us to re-elect him."

3) Hardcore Stoners who invalidate Mr. Stone's opponents by calling them anti-American leftists or advising them to leave the Ward.

Thanks to these things the 50th Ward is becoming the Mississippi of Chicago, a backward repressive environment akin to Quebec before Premier Jean Lesage's Quiet Revolution in the 1960's.

the tattoo parlor will open with a special use permit issued by the zoning board and stone can say he was against a zoning change, so both stone and the business owner come out winners. Remember in the letter stone said he is not going to approve a zoning change, he didn't say he was not going to allow a tattoo parlor. Read between the lines.

You need to brush up on your English skills. The complaint that Stone's record is criminal is not the same as saying that Stone has been successfully prosecuted. And your logic does not compute. There are plenty of instances since Stone got elected where alderman who had been re-elected were then sent to jail. Stone looks corrupt, acts corrupt and defends corruption. Don't be too surprised that people think he's corrupt!

Hi,

Just came across your blog, and I thought you folks should be the first to know, we have approved the elevation to Sainthood of Bernard L. Stone!

The best researchers on our papal staff have now thoroughly investigated St. Bernard's long life, and they are convinced he has lived a life WITHOUT SIN!

Naturally, I was at first skeptical of considering a candidate of the Jewish persuasion, but my staff assured me he was not particularly observant.

We received a very moving letter of nomination from a young Ms. I. Feketisch, who seemed very familiar with St. Bernard from both family and work perspectives. She included several photographs, and our researched were convinced of the Divine Hand in the astonishingly immaculate state of preservation of St. Bernard's mortal flesh.

We are also in receipt of a very convincing letter from a local real estate investor, who was delighted to relate how St. Bernard obtained $5 dollars US from property taxpayers, with not even so much as a squeal, and used it to transform a $10 million dollar shopping mall into a $40 million dollar shopping mall, describing it as a nothing short of a MIRACLE, and, after looking into it, we have to agree!

Congratulations to St. Bernard and all who are blessed to know him!

News flash Jay the First Amendment is not absolute like yelling fire in say the movie theater at Devon and McCormick.. go try to yell fire in there and I am sure you will blame Alderman Stone for your arrest, conviction and having to do community service.

Sorry Jay but you can't say what ever you want about who every you want, when ever you want and not have consquences. Some are legal, some our moral etc.

I mean, you know & I know that when the alderman takes cash from someone seeking a zoning change, it has NO effect on his decision, he ALWAYS does whats best for the community, he has said so, and I believe him of course, but, let's face it, some people are as you say IDIOTS and just don't get it and never will. Since there are so many IDIOTS in the neighborhood, maybe the thing to do is avoid the sorts of things that set them off? The aldermen can shut down this offense speech ANY TIME HE WANTS TO. All he has to to is implement a policy: "You are free to work as a zoning lawyer on issues in the 50th ward, and you are free to contribute to my political campaign, but you may not do both." We're done!

It is a frequent tactic by Ald. Stone and his thugs to use everything they can think of to silence his critics. That's what this post was about, the great lengths that Stone will go to eliminate dissent. We need to be honest with ourselves about this: if you "attack" (criticize) Ald. Stone you should expect to be ruthlessly and viciously attacked, through both legal and illegal means. We have seen that time and time again, and no one should expect what appears here to be different. Stone is not exactly an honorable man, who has displayed a conscience. He is a street thug who glorifies mobsters and mob rule here in Chicago, free of the rule of law or constitutional rights.
