Brewer Announces 50th Ward Independent Alliance

Greg Brewer, who was the primary thorn in Ald. Stone's side for all of 2006, seems committed to stay there. Today, he announced the formation of an independent political organization:

Even better than dealing with issues as they occur is carrying forward the lessons of each election to plan and prepare for the next. As individuals we can help ensure fair elections by working as election judges or volunteering as pollwatchers in each and every election. But we can be even more effective by working together as a group, pooling our resources and building a knowledge base.

With that as our goal, I propose creating an independent political organization for the 50th Ward. Early next week I will announce the details of an organizational meeting to take place the week of May 7. In the meantime, please feel free to send me your ideas or post them here.

Let's not lose what we've started. Thank you.

This is an exciting prospect, allowing those people who are interested in watching the alderman and the Chicago Machine vigilantly a credible vehicle. This is terrific news for the residents of the 50th.

Go Greg! I'm excited.

Hey JS,

Where did Greg originally post this? Or is this a Fight in the 50th exclusive?

Is the crd50 site up and running again?

I thought Greg Brewer was new to the ward? How many years does he live here 3-4?

Anonymous #1 - My understanding is that Greg has lived in our ward for nearly a decade now. He decided to make it his home because he loved the area.

In the years he's been here he's been active in CAPS, founded Citizens for Responsible Development and help co found a bungalow association.

But anyway, what does it matter how many years one has lived here?

Thanks for the enthusiastic response from the 35th precinct. I had planned to make a more complete announcement next week (which I'll still do), but since there was a discussion of voting irregularities on the West Roger Park Yahoo Group, I took the opportunity to post there.

I hope to have crd50.org back online within the next week. I'm working on it.

I first moved to Chicago in 1975 and have lived in the 50th Ward for six years. I plan to stay.

I smell fear from the Stoners...
Didn't residency come up from them as an issue with Dolar?
Really, what difference does it make if one has lived here 3 years or 30 years? Greg is proposing monitoring a corrupt system. I am interested in being part of that knowledge base. Stoners, you will be watched.

I'm just glad that we finally have someone who's not afraid to stand up to Stone. I voted for Naisy, but I'm disappointed that she wouldn't debate him. My neighbors sure gave me an earful about that. Stone has to be watched.

Naisy didnt debate because she was afraid !! A big mistake on her part, she should have done her homework and not listened to her campaign manager. take charge thats what a alderman does and naisy did not do that. Now we know why she lost, Not enough gutsssss

I find it more than strange coincidence that Brewer announces an "independent organization" shortly after Naisy spent an hour talking about starting exactly such an organization with a room of enthusiastic precinct captains and volunteers.

Brewer needs to support the person who has the organization to fight the fight, and who has the community standing behind her. That's Naisy. Her vote total in the run-off was nearly 98% of all the non-Stone vote in February - i.e. Brewer's and Aftab's voters rallied to Naisy en masse, with only a few exceptions.

This move by Brewer threatens to divide the community again. Strategically speaking, it's a shot in the 50th ward's own foot.

We already know Naisy can't stand up to Stone. Plus, Naisy's talking about keeping her campaign organization together for another run. That's not a check on Stone at all. Naisy needs the protection that it sounds like Greg is proposing. If Naisy was smart, she'd support Greg's efforts to balance the Democratic machine here.

Did we ever learn why Naisy Dolar declined to debate Stone? Just wondering.

Folks, Folks, Folks,

The election is over - it's four years until the next one. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Haha, wow. But it's good to see so much excitement.

But if we're going to get into this discussion then I'd like to state that (a.) Since when was Naisy the only person who could be politically active and
(b.) If Naisy is planning to run again it's going to be difficult. Alot of people are just turned off by her. She had her chance. Let's see who can give the ward back to the people next time around.

"The election is over - it's four years until the next one"

Perhaps. What about a race between Naisy Dolar and Bernie Stone just ten months away (for Democratic Committeeman)? That might explain anonymost's apprehension. Naisy needs to keep people united to make that fight.

First it was her campaignmanager who said NO.
Second Naisy was afraid of an open forum where she may not be able to answer the question.

Looks like a fight between Dolar and Brewer again and the election is over. Bad blood...

Umm... what? This logic doesn't follow at all. If anyone, Naisy has the means to "protect" Greg; what protection does Greg offer when he couldn't get out more votes than she?? Her turnout illustrates commitment, organization, and infrastructure. His 1,000 votes shorter than her indicates, at best, a lot of bark but no bite.

Brewer people are spinning again.

It's clear folks--people LIKE Naisy Dolar--she did really really well against the machine.

Her loss had nothing to do with not participating in the SHAM debate that Stone set up.

Brewer backers, you should be ashamed of yourselves for dissing her like that.

FOLKS

Drop this Greg v. Naisy thing, its counter productive and serves to divide Stone's opposition. Neither Greg or Naisy benefit from a pissing match this early, Stone does.

Let them both move ahead with their respective agendas. As community leaders I expect Naisy to have more support than Greg, however I expect him to have a loyal following. More importantly the largest segment of the population will be in the middle and will be sympathetic and supportive of both.

If its about changing the ward then there can be no Greg v. Naisy pissing match 4 years before the next election. Also, with the excpection of the trash talking on this board I have no reason to believe there is tension between the two of them.

Well, there goes Russ Stewart's prediction that Dolar would be the likely winner in 4 years.

Also, when are the wards redistricted? After the 2010 census, I think. Wouldn't that possibly mean new ward boundaries in the next aldermanic run.

North Edgewater could be given back to the 48th and some of the precincts between California and Western could be thrown over to the 49th.

The regular Dems would be happy and then the Brewer people could rest easy with their own kind of guy as Alderman, Joe Moore.

I don't know. I'd be surprised if Naisy ran again. She sacrificed a lot for that race. You can't put off your family forever.

Like every working mom, Naisy had a tough -- but doable -- balance of work and parenting. No need to think that she couldn't or shouldn't run again. She is a very hard worker and a great mom at the same time.

At April 28, 2007 5:47 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Of course Naisy will run again. She's very selfish or ambitious. The only person she's afraid of is the Alderman! Squawk, goes the little chicken. We won! We will win again! FOUR MORE YEARS!

To Ilana's daughters--if your mom was as good, and as unselfish and giving a mom as Naisy is, you wouldn't have been brought up to behave as you do on this blog.

Another Nut case from the Dolar campaign.
Investigator for the Chicago Board of Elections, asks Jack Lebovitz, who is campaigning for Naisy Dolar, to move outside the polling place at 6833 N. Kedzie Ave., where he is handing out literature. Lebovitz said that because all the voters for this precinct live inside the building, he should be allowed to campaign inside.
