The Arrogance of Power
I had an interesting conversation with a worker from Streets & Sans last night. He was sort of laughing at me for using the blue bags and my defense of recycling. It's not separated, he said. Our garbage doesn't go to one of the city's MRF's. It goes straight to the landfill. The blue bags that are collected in the 50th don't get removed beforehand.
What was insulting, as I thought about this more, is that they are just laughing at us. It costs us money, real money, to take our trash to the landfill. With recycling, the city actually makes money. Maybe not much, but when you add together what we make from recycling and the reduced costs from not having to pay to add more to the landfill, the savings could be considerable.
Chicago built three or four state of the art recycling facilities in the 1990s. Granted, we are on the edge of the city, but it sounds like it was the alderman or Ward Superintendent who made the decision not to use these facilities.
They must not care if our taxes go up. We wouldn't want to inconvenience them to actually do their jobs! Besides, Stone was probably asleep when the subject came up.
We've been misled. I'm going to blame Stone because he's our point of contact with the city. He doesn't have to be. No one asked him to. He took the blame on his shoulders all by himself. And I'm going to blame Stone because he always tells us that it's his decision (except when it makes him look bad - anybody else ever notice that?)
But I'm not going to stop recycling. Ald. Stone, who has a cushy part-time job (where you can sleep on the job!) that pays more than $100,000, may not care if our taxes go up, but I do. Stone is probably too old to care about the health and beauty of our city, but I do. There's a recycling center at 6441 N. Ravenswood. That's where I'll be taking my blue bags.
Mostly, though, I came away from this conversation amazed at the arrogance of Berny Stone and his people. They truly don't care about us. They just don't get it. They think it's THEIR ward, and that we are fools. Accountability is not a once every four years thing.

Well you raise a good point. Stone and his supporters just do whatever they want and then invalidate anyone who holds them accountable.
We see it in your comments section. The Alderpawn threatening lawsuits like some Nazi Gauleiter and other Stoners advising Bernie's detractors to either shut up or move. I just wonder what it will take to really drive Stone and his Moneychangers from the Temple as it were?

No, I am not assuming. I am trying, as I always try to do, to faithfully report the conversation that the posts come from. They may be right, they may be wrong. Like so many things written here, since it is hidden behind Stone's curtain of super secrecy, there is no way to verify it independently. But we are all witness to the blight and degradation of our neighborhood. I want to understand why. Here's another reason.

So JS what is the S and S worker Job title which ward do they work in? I am sure a Motor Truck Driver who works out of the 38 Wad know what goes o in the 50th ward just like an Equipment Disatcher who work out of City Hall know what goes on in the 50 Ward or the Administratative Assistant works in the 12 Ward know what goes on in the 50th Ward. Get the picture.
The person I talked to works in the 50th Ward. As is the policy of this blog, I obviously won't give you any identifying information as it could be used for purposes of retaliation by the alderman or his sycophants. When the alderman and his organization stop retaliating against people just because they think differently, then the policy of this blog will be changed. I'm not holding my breathe.
This is #2-I'm sure the people I attend synagogue with daily, some of whom supported Dolar like myself, and my colleagues in the two suburban religious schools I teach at will chuckle at the thought that they were in the presence of an anti-Semite. This is very hurtful especially since on occasion I've encountered anti-Jewish comments in the Inner City health care facility where I'm employed. It shows how low Bernard Stone and his supporters will go. As for Finkelstein, he has made some thoughtful observations about the Arab-Israeli conflict that doesn't render him an anti-Semite nor deserving of the wretched treatment he has received at the hands of Alan Dershowitz.
As for these repetitive "Left vrs Right"; they really have no place here. The neo-cons have nothing to brag about. They have plunged this country into an unjust war in Iraq, ruined healthcare, allowed fuel prices to rise to intolerable levels, and offer filling our country with illegals as their version of immigration reform. Henry Wallace, the best President America never had, would never have equaled their record in incompetence. I can only state that the last post was extremely hateful and hurtful. It is disgusting to have in our neighborhood such an evil person who would castigate as "anti-Semitic" someone who simply disagrees with him. CAPSMAN (who many of us believe is Ilana) is a little over the top. One of the reasons that it seems to be Ilana is that CAPSMAN has a pathological relationship with the alderman, and can't accept any criticism of him whatsoever. I agree. The use of the term in the absence of actual anti-Semitism, by this poster will now be considered repetitive and rejected. I honestly don't believe that this poster knows what the term means. The fact that they will so callously throw it at Jews is worrisome, to say the least. I think that is an indication of self-loathing, myself. But you just get the feeling they don't like Jews, and that bothers me.
