The Price of Suppression

One of the things that has emerged in this particular election is how divided the ward has become. It is clear that Ald. Stone has long neglected parts of the ward outside his base area of support. Religious figures talk about meeting Stone and "having to kiss his ring." I think they meant figuratively. There is a lot of resentment for how Stone treats people and how little he and his staff work to address the problems here.

For Stone's supporters, this has been eye-opening. It is easy to pin our suppressed resentment on the "outsiders" who have been hired or volunteered to come into the ward. While it may be no big deal for us to contribute or help Joe Leiberman or someone else who doesn't live in the 50th, it seems to be a much bigger deal that the people of Chicago (or surrounding areas) express an interest in the outcome of this election.

Alderman are not just ward managers but also city legislators. They influence city policy, and have a vote on the direction that the city of Chicago will take. It is no different than taking an interest in a Senate election in another state.

Berny Stone has tried to run this ward as a mob boss. Intimidation and derision have long been his weapons of choice. But the price to be paid is that people get tired of it. Something that may have worked in the 1970s or even 1990s doesn't seem that effective now. One reason is because of the internet, and how it has allowed us to voice our discontent.

There should be no doubt that there are people here who honestly and freely support Ald. Stone. There should also be no doubt that there are people here who don't. The price of suppression is that the latter fact is now becoming apparent to all. The bubble has burst. Stone may be much beloved by his core group of supporters. But that feeling is not universally shared. People are now free to voice their discontent. And they have.

On February 27th, we will be free to show how we really feel about Berny Stone.

I just hope that those who do not support Stone can get a fair shake at the polling places, I think we've all heard these stories before. Poll watchers stay alert!

Another ignorant post. Why wouldnt you get a fair shake?? This is a free country we can vote for who we believe is the best person for the job. Nobody is breaking your arm to vote for anyone.

This is a very common pattern with Ald. Stone. No one would be surprised if the source of the racist mail is someone close to Stone, probably with his direct knowledge. I will write about this soon.

Whenever Stone feels his political career is in jeopardy, he always trots out some outrageous charge or accusation. I won't be played for a fool. Will you? It's time to end the Stone's use of racially-charged tactics. The only way to do that is to elect someone new.

CBS: Stone ... is the longest-serving member of the City Council.

Stone is 3rd longest serving

Burke - elected 1970
Natarus - elected 1971
Stone - elected 1973

Did anyone else get the same mailing I got today from Stone?

The one with the picture of Greg Brewer, wearing the long, black fake beard he used to impersonate Mohammed Siddiqi, the developer of the Devon-Rockwell parking garage/luxury condo project, when Brewer went to the City Department of Planning and Development, in order to gain access to Top Secret planning documents?

50th Ward Tribune Editorial Board interview now online

The beard is real cheesy-looking on Greg. Amazing DPD fell for it!

Where's CAPSMAN lately? I miss him.

After the "judenrat" comment he got scolded by his boss for his amateurish attempts to inject race:

"You want to see how to use race in a political campaign, Alan? Watch and learn."

The Master is taking over!

I do not believe that Stone sent that to himself, I am no Stone fan trust me, but that is just dirty. Surely you agree that no one should be subjected racial slurs. That is just below the belt.

First watch the poll watchers for Brewer,Dolar etc. History shows if you cantget yourvote out, then try to be distruptive.

Second Hugh you want to define what a Judenrat is?

Third, I guess if Brewer wont steel his own signs but Stone can send himself hate mail.

I can't believe that Nansy Dolar is attacking Greg Brewer! What's that all about?

If she makes it into the run-off, though, I'm staying home. I'm sick of this kind of negative politics where mud-slinging is the rule. You expect this kind of stuff from the machine! It's disgusting.

Someone, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Stone pull some trick like this in another election? Now on the news he says he was sent hate mail but this sounds REALLY familiar to me. JS could you comment? I did not get a cheesy mailer like Hugh did and now I feel left out.

I saw the video of the Tribune editorial board, I don't understand why they endorsed Dolar. She seems to be a nice lady, but I don't think that she has what it takes to run the ward.
Where is she planning to get the money to pay an staff for every
issue?
I've been listening carefully to her at the candidates forum and that is her solution to the problems that she always present.
We need an Alderman with a real plan and real solutions, even with the budget limitations that I know, the wards have.
Please, do not tell the voter what we would like to ear, but what you will do in the most realistic, possible way.

I think you are suffering of a lack of plan.

Thanks god, non the Tribune or the Sun Times influence my vote.

By the way, being a member of Decatour local school council do not impress me, that is not a community school, I tried for year to enroll my children and never get in, I had to compete with children from all over the city. So, nice try.

Naisy's been trashing Brewer for weeks. They have been telling people that he was a developer, not an architect, and he wants to gentrify the ward. And there was that cheap shot at the forum. I don't know why you are surprised. I can't see myself voting for Naisy, but then, I can't see myself voting for Bernie, either.

I might have to join you on sitting that one out. I sure hope it doesn't come down to Stone-Dolar, though.

I'd vote for Stone in a Stone-Dolar run-off. Greg makes more sense to me, Naisy is just too immature. I think she's the opponent Stone wants to see.

Hugh, what the are you the hell are you talking about with the Bernie mailer? Brewer got the plans through a FOIA request.

OH, AND WHO DO YOU THINK I AM,ANYWAY?? ONE MORE THING HUGH-YOUR PREJUDICES ARE KNOWN BY MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY-AND THEY FEEL YOUR HATRED OF STONE IS LARGELY ROOTED IN THAT FACT!BUT,KEYBOARD KOMMANDO HUGH,YOU OBVIOUSLY ARE WELL AWARE OF THAT!!!!!!!!

You Brewer guys and gals are tricky. Attacks? You have been making stealth attacks on Naisy from the very beginning. Your attacks have increased -- as evidenced here -- ever since she has gained the endorsement of both the Tribune and the Sun-Times.

I'm backing Naisy because she's the best candidate but I will certainly vote for Brewer if there's a run-off between him and Stone. But I do think it will be a run-off between Stone and Dolar. Any Brewer supporter who really wants Stone out of office should do the same.

At February 22, 2007 6:01 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

There's only one reason why Naisy would attack Greg Brewer: she knows she's in third place. If she were in second place, she would ignore Greg and focus her attacks on Stone.

Naisy's attack on Greg Brewer demonstrates her weakness and her perception of the strength of another challenger. She clearly understands that there is no run-off is in her future. The only question that remains is will Naisy keep her word about supporting the winning challenger.

At February 22, 2007 6:34 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The real Question is Why hasn't Greg Brewer voted in an aldermanic election in the 50th ward? How can a candidate defend his position against Stone and still not vote against him when given the opportunity. Greg Brewer is in this for Greg Brewer, He could not even say Anybody but Stone at the Boone Candidate Forums.

It "do not impress me" and it's Decatur not "Decatour" and you don't have to be impressed. As a classical school Decatur takes high scoring individuals and a percentage of the locals but is not required to take everyone. Rogers school takes the rest. The local school council is an election based body consisting of parent representatives AND community representatives AND teachers. It is a two year term and an interested individual may run for re-election again after two years.

that question has been answered before! even naisy knows the answer (she just won't tell you)!

greg brewer has only lived in the 50th ward for one municipal election. in 2003, he was on a business trip to indiana. yes, that's right! naisy misled you! he could not just walk down the block to vote! he was delayed by work unexpectedly, and thus unable to return in time to vote.

it's a great reason to be happy with the early voting procedures instituted in 2006.

you're probably feeling a bit foolish now that you know the truth. it is sad when facts are ignored by candidates just because they feel the need to attack another candidate. naisy's attack on greg was an act of desperation. she knows she's behind, so it doesn't matter if she offends his supporters.

naisy actually has polling data that tells her that many of greg's supporters won't support her in a run-off. what you've seen here is only illustrative of that. that was the main reason that seiu asked Naisy to drop out. it's not simply that greg brewer has the *best* chance to beat stone, it's that he's the *only* one who has a chance to beat stone.

naisy knows this, and doesn't care. you can decide why, i don't have time to think about it. we are focused on stone. naisy is running far behind and doesn't factor in our calculations. voters who really want to beat stone are joining us...

Brewer is staying in this so he can pay down the $85,000 in loans he has to pay off. Its expensive to pay 3 full time bloggers, who couldn't help him raise more than $20,000 in individual donations. LOL He wants a run-off so he can have SEIU pay off his debt.

At February 22, 2007 8:20 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Maybe Naisy's campaign chose to send a piece on Greg so VOTERS can be more INFORMED.

I highly doubt she's 3rd in the race. If she had nothing to offer, two of the most read newspapers in Chicago would NOT endorse her. They've been in business for how long?! I'm confident the Tribune and the Sun-Times made the right decision.

Don't hate Greg fans. Just because the endorsement didn't go to you and you had to RE HIGHLIGHT the CFL endorsement. Very innovative.

At February 22, 2007 8:21 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

AC, how would YOU know what polling data the Dolar camp would have?

"naisy knows this, and doesn't care. you can decide why, i don't have time to think about it."

Looks like you had time to think about it enough to RESPOND to it.

At February 22, 2007 8:27 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The latest CFL mailer doesn't even mention Brewer. Even labor is jumping off that sinking ship!

Dolar got all the endorsements and can raise money for a run-off.

Labor realizes Brewer was a mistake.

At February 22, 2007 8:28 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

AC, you don't have to constantly reiterate what SEIU did. Obviously, they realized that Greg doesn't stand a chance otherwise they would have endorsed him in the beginning.

Why would they ask Naisy to drop out yet NOT endorse Greg? All that wasted effort...

SEIU woke up and realized Naisy's stronger than you mislead people to think.

I think Greg should have been more straight forward with the residents.

GREG HAS MISLEAD US.

If Greg really cared about the ward, he would have cast his vote four years ago.

If Greg really cared about our community, he would have quit his job to run full time.

He couldn't take a few minutes away from his work four years ago.. what's his excuse now for not devoting all his efforts to the ward?

Let me add my voice to those who will not vote for Naisy in a run-off. I'm not surprised Naisy attacked another candidate. I don't know if I'd say she was immature, but she lacks class.

ac, that seiu polli is stale.

now go drive your candidate to the bank so he can take out a second mortgage on his bungalow to pay your salary.

Thanks for the English lesson, how is your Spanish? parece que no muy bien, as you can see English is my second language.

But is irrelevant, the point is, that is unfortunate that Naisy decides to deviate the attention of her campaign to attack Greg Brewer.

Not voting in one election? so what!!!, prior to this one, when was the last time that we have real opposition to Stone and for the right or wrong reasons he was not the only one, th thousand of us did not vote either.
But if I have the community involvement of the candidates, Brewer get my A+. At the end, is what it really count.

While some challengers waste time and money going negative on other challengers, The Old Pro is GEARING UP!

On Tuesday, 2/20/2007, Wal-Mart Stores Inc., a corporation in Bentonville, Arkansas, gave $15,000 to the political action committee of a chamber of commerce - IN CHICAGO!

2/20/2007 $15,000 Wal-Mart to Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce PAC

Today, Thursday, 2/22/2007, Alderman Stone reported two very generous contributions - from the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce!

Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce PAC to:
Bernard L Stone Campaign Committee

$5,000 2/22/2007
$7,500 2/22/2007

That's right, two gifts in the same day!

Kind of makes a joke out of the $1500 tid-bit Stone got from Wal-mart two weeks ago:

$1,500.00 2/5/2007

THANKS, Wal-mart! THANKS, Chamber! For all your help in picking our alderman. What would we do without you?

The real Forest Claypool Story
Claypool was a fundraiser for Daley when he decided it was time to reclaim his father’s Chicago. Then Forest goes to work for a true Reformer Pat Quinn then Illinois Treasurer and no ones friend in the corrupt democratic or republican party.
Then Pat Quinn runs on an anti corruption platform against then Secretary of State George Ryan. Its time for Claypool to come on. He leaves when Quinn needs him most to become Daley's chief of Staff. Daley then endorses his friend Ryan( the republican over) over that pesky Quinn. Quinn gets buried in a landslide. Corruption takes hold at city hall(Ryan goes on to become Governor) and of course Clayfool (like Sergeant Shultz in Hogan Heros), "knows nothing!". Nothing for 8 years, He's Mr. Clean after all and says “had he known any thing he would have demanded change or resigned”! Yea right! He then becomes head of the park district, makes Daley's friends richer by privatizing, while firing the African-American employees. Park Workers connected to white Cook County committeemen, like Mike Madigan, Burke, Mell, etc., get a pass. Now the park district which use to provide free programs for poor children in Chicago, says only those that pay can come out and play.
Calyfool,(who was then married}has an affair with a daughter of an prominent alderman who works for him at the park district. The good Catholic Daley finds out and demands he stop seeing her. Forest refuses and resigns in a huff. But Hey Forest is still Daley’s favorite so his career continues to sky rocket

Forest Flayfool is nothing but a Daley Stooge in his effort to ethnically cleanse this city
