A Ward Divided

IN JANUARY 2001 the only thing that was clear was that we lived in a divided nation. Here in the 50th, some people thought Al Gore was our rightful president while others were glad that George Bush would be inaugurated.

It may be said that the same is true in April 2007, except it's not the nation that is as divided, but the 50th Ward. And, unlike 2001, there are some (mostly Stone supporters) who are surprised by this division.

What is clear to me is that Ald. Stone has no one to blame but himself. Like George W. Bush, Berny Stone has a tin ear to dissent. He has made numerous errors in judgment, starting with the selecting of his daughter to be his chief-of-staff. Like many of those who lost their offices this year, the 50th has a staff that does not provide a positive customer service experience. Berny Stone almost lost not because he faced an able opponent (and I suspect that people underestimate Naisy Dolar) but because he's made it easy for people to oppose him. He neglects them, they don't support him.

There have been numerous calls for healing, from Stone and others. But after more than 6 years of George Bush, does anyone believe that the nation healed from the 2000 election? I don't know that it's realistic to expect the ward to heal, unless Stone shows some humility and leadership. Whether the ward heals depends on him and how he treats us. No one else can do anything.

Stone can start the healing in the 50th by firing Ilana. It should be clear that she will never be a delightful staffer. She treats residents as if they were pond scum. I don't see that as likely to change. The rest of his staff takes their cues from her (or perhaps they are rude because Ilana is so difficult to work with).

One reason that I don't think it will change is because I believe she likes that people are intimidated by her. I can't imagine what frightening little old ladies gets you, but it must do something for her. If she enjoys playing the intimidator, she is not suited to have contact with residents in a position of authority.

Another step that Berny Stone can take to facilitate healing is to treat all residents the same. The entire ward should receive city services when they are needed and requested. That shouldn't be difficult. It's a mystery why this doesn't already occur.

If Stone really wants the ward to heal, he will start having regular townhall meetings or public question-and-answer sessions. Hiding in his tower or substituting appearances on NTNM for public meetings is no longer tolerable. Moreover, his performance on the 12th has proven that he can do this. The only excuse now is either age or laziness.

Whether the ward heals is entirely up to Bernie Stone. But our dear readers can also do their part. There are some very angry and bitter people who post here, people who don't seem to care for their neighbors. Yes, the ward is changing and these changes do not help Berny Stone. The election is over, and we will live with Ald. Stone. The real question is, will the Stone sycophants live with the dissent that Stone's presence inevitably creates?

In 2004, George Bush went on to get re-elected. But I think history will show Bush as one of our worst presidents, in part because he neglected the people of this country. Berny Stone risks going down in history in much the same terms. His legacy can be seen with every sidewalk that needs repairing, every rodent warning sign, every piece of trash that swirls around. Only Berny Stone can save the tattered legacy of Berny Stone.

Yes, I'm sure Bernie has learned his lesson and resolved to be a better person and a better alderman. Yeah, right. That's why his victory comments focused on bashing Naisy and Jan Schakowsky. Stone is all the things his opponents said he was and he's not about to change. Well, we're not going to change either. We're committed to the fight for better government and a better ward. We're not going away and we're not going to be quiet. We're going to be part of the process and hold Stone accountable whether he likes it or not.

You talk about a divided ward and all the animosity. By you keeping this site open yes you may allow people to vent but you stir up more shit and cause more trouble and you want peace. I don’t see that happening. From what I see here this site just angers people. You have people bashing each other. If people want change and want to see the Alderman they have the rite to. He has office hours from what I hear Monday & Thursday evenings. People should speak their mind there, and make suggestions there. Do you think he reads this Bull??

Hey anonymous,

Please get a clue. This is not about trying to encourage the Intimidator to continue her frothing at the mouth or to teach Stone how to do the job of a truly reponsive and responsible alderman. This is addressed to ward residents with some points on reflecting about our shared political lives.

Clearly, you see ward office hours and unanswered phone requests as a marker of peace. So far, it has not been that and folks should be prepared to be active and engaged in improving life in the 50th ward and the city.

As one can readily see by the ever spiteful p.t.baer,the responsibility for divisiveness is on the Anti-Stone crowd. Lets look at this ,in a calm and rational way.To begin with, one look at the cultural and religious mosaic that was the Stone Campaign shows rhat Berny Stone is a UNIFIER. Second-Stone did not start this bitterness between people within the ward,Greg Brewer and Naisy Dolar did with their decision(s) to create dissatisfaction with Stone by use of Negativity,hate-mongering(on age and OTHER ISSUES),Dolar's ethnic/racial CRUSADE,and the maniacal desire to replace Stone with a puppet of the SELF-Appointed Community saviors(a large number of whom are located in the central part of the ward(many in the bungalow belt);these people chose to live here and yet they are happy about nothing. Why? One must look back to the REVENGE -DRIVEN agenda of IRVING LOUNDY to find a candidate to defeat Stone. That led to the BREWER candidacy which had most every bigot and ill-willed person living here involved in and which even sought to turn BUNGALOW owners against their neighbors;those who didn't particularly like the BREWER Flavor went with Dolar, and in the run-off were with Dolar in ONE HUGE HATE-FILLED ANTI-STONE CRUSADE(financed and driven by agenda motivated outsiders). Since election day they have refused to be conciliatory and their bitterness goes on. Unfortunately,it is not surprising NOW,they make FALSE predictions of future victimhood-this is pure NONSENSE-NOBODY is going to string barbed wire around the INDIAN BOUNDARY AREA and these supposedly intelligent people know this;they just can't get off their merry-go-round.TOO BAD that they are such small people.

that's the silliest thing I've ever read. if the sanctimonious Stone was a unifier, no one would have run against him. not only did Stone's prior service induce three people to run against him, but only the help of outsiders saved him. Stone was right to credit the machine with his success because he certainly isn't wanted here. I suspect that another candidate, at least someone with the guts to show up at that last debate, would have beaten Stone. Naisy blew it.

Forgive me for chuckling, but the liberal Democrats in the 50th Ward have no one to blame but themselves.

By winking at the Illinois Democratic culture of corruption and nespotism when it suits them, how can they now weep crocodile tears when they see it in their own backyard?

Todd Stroger was the most notorious recent example of that shameless nespotism, but when I worked a precinct last Nov. for Tony Peraica -- a pct that turned out to be a Brewer/Dolar stronghold -- it was the liberal Dems who determined that the pct not go for Peraica. I came 9 votes short of carrying it for the Republican -- extremely good for a city pct -- but 9 ultra-libs just couldn't bear to vote for a Republican so they wrote-in Forrest Claypool, thereby giving the precinct to the famously inept oldest son, Todd.

Their contempt for the Republican label superceded any stated commitment to good government. They were apparently more concerned with a candidate's meaningless position on gay marriage than serious good government at the county level.

Was Lisa Madigan the most qualified attorney in the entire state? Pulleasse!!

So now there is the prospect of Alderman Ilana.

As ye reap, so shall ye sow!

The smartest thing I have heard someone say in a while. From what I know in the past people complain about service. If in fact you call the aldermans office for a service request, be it a garbage can, tree trim, street light, they put it in the computer and you are mailed a conformation letter. People cant say I called in and never got the service if they have the letter.I know when I called I got a letter.
I thought it was a good system. Has that changed ? I dont know I have not called in for anything in a while.

Whets your excuse??
Age or Laziness ?? You couldn’t even cut your own lawn from what I have heard. The City had to come in and cut it for you. Don’t you know this is a health issue? Don’t you know the high grass traps trash? Don’t you know that the high grass harbors rodents? Let it be known. They had to post rodent warning signs by your house for this simple reason... Here you are complaining about these same things that you claim the Alderman can’t take of. If everyone were like you, we would have even more people bashing the alderman>>>

Lost in all the hoopla over SEIU involvement in the Ald. campaigns was the fact that the big loser was the illegal alien lobby which tried to foist its agenda in the 50th ward and in suburban Carpentersville. Dolar's campaign manager is a staffer for the flagship of the illegal alien lobby, the ICIRR, and that group also invested heavily in the Carpentersville race. All 3 of the candidates they opposed in that suburb won handily as did Ald. Stone.
Seems that the righteous indignation of citizens and legal residents is able to withstand their big money efforts.

the alderman won by 600 plus votes. That's a record for this ward. In the alst aldermanic election the challenger someone without a machine, office or campaign got 1000 votes to Stone's
7000 plus votes. How did Naisy 'blow it?'

A comment by a voter on election day sums up Berny's M.O. perfectly: "I knew there was an election coming up: I saw a pothole being fixed."

With no election to worry about for another 4 years, Berny is not going to change anything right now. Expecting different is pure fantasy.

I think a step in the right direction would be for Stone's hardcore partisans to stop telling those of us who voted for Naisy & greg to move out of the ward! What is this a one party dictatorship?

And let's face it- A lot of us never liked Bernie. I've lived in the ward since 1994 and I have voted against him in every aldermanic election.

The 50th Ward is the best ward to live in. Reason: Alderman Stone spent many years, putting forth a lot of effort to make it a wonderful place to live. His experience is key.

Congrats to Alderman Stone and kudos to his staff who put forth so much effort!

Ms. Dolar doesn't have the know-how or experience. That's why she didn't win. Many people in this ward have been here for years and appreciate what he has done.

JAY, JAY,
Are you out there? Could you answer the post since you complain about RATS, GARBAGE, city service that the aldreman provide. You got your city service from what I understand. Your neighbors were shocked when the lawn was finally cut, and the mice ran out.Could you shed a little light on those city services??

At April 20, 2007 2:55 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

why did many alderman who have had years of experience, many incumbents...face a strong sizeable opposition, barely beat their opponents, and many lost.

Natarus lost, Matlak lost, Berny won but with a small majority (only 600 more votes...there are many other examples, so apparently experience is valuable, but not the deciding factor

Dont you know you were harboring rodents, trapping trash, violatimg health codes?? You seem to know everything, maybe you need to research your own issues?? It's hilarious and symbolic that the Stoners have stooped to criticizing Stones' critics for their lawns and homes. It's the only thing they can find to criticize--and it's about the only thing Stone knows how to do -- streets and sanitation. And that's only under pressure. Like others in the ward, I was amused to see an unusual amount of activity (cleaning the alleys, etc.) right before election day.

Will those who opposed Stone ever accept their defeat? Is the 50th Ward now condemned to a permanent State of Division because the Anti-Stone Crowd will NOT accept reality;just like those "progressives",who,3.5 yrs later ,still drive around with their Kerry Bumper Stickers.Unfortunatly, this is the "marxist"mind set of the FAR-LEFT-"Constant Struggle";thats how their professsional "organizers" manage to keep getting paid-by the "Struggle" NEVER-ENDING.

Yes so now we have a new Stalinist posture from the Stoners. Since I have voted again Bernie, in every election since '95, I don't deserve to live in the Ward and should move. Perhaps these illiterate fools would like to answer the question as to why then should we even have elections if they are going that way? Let's just appoint our Aldermen for life or have them run unopposed like in bygone days in the various People's Democracies that made up the Warsaw Pact countries!
