The Stroger Legacy

Can Ald. Stone last two and a half years? That's how long he'd have to serve so that he could resign and see Ilana appointed to serve out his term.

You've seen the pictures (from his website and literature). You've seen Berny. He's not a spring chicken anymore and he looks it. Stone walks gingerly. Many times in recent years, he's been assisted by an ever-present aide. Rumors of hospitalizations abound. He is not a well man.

But Berny has to live (and serve) more than two years to prevent a special election should he be unable to complete his term. The Mayor can't appoint a new alderman if there are more than two years remaining in the term.

So the question is, can Berny Stone last two and a half years?

We know what his response would be. He thinks he will live forever. He needs to serve another ten years to meet his declared goal of being the oldest alderman ever. That's not going to happen, and I don't think Berny believes it will happen, either.

It's his other goal, that Ilana succeed him, that we have to worry about. And that requires that he serve another two and a half years.

We can stop this madness on April 17th. Naisy Dolar has a shot. It may be a slim shot, but it's still the only way to ensure that Ilana is not alderman in three years. Stone's promises to the contrary are worthless (about as good as any of Stone's promises). Only by electing Naisy can we prevent Ilana's ascendancy. That's the only way. This is about the future, and Ilana casts a pale shadow over the 50th.

Be careful Jay. Just the mention of Ilana will get you a "you're a Stone hating carpetbagging devil worshipping blight". You know this site is shaking the alderspawn's world of perceived inheritance and all the perks attached to it. They may even steal your sign! So the gloves are off in this election? Good. Maybe the mask will come off too.

The campaign is forcing Stone to get out more in public, but there's no good reason to believe he won't be up to his normal, less stressful, routine as alderman. Difficulty walking and ups and downs with his health are no bar to serving. Even an extended hospitalization wouldn't require him to resign. These things happen to much younger people and, frankly, the duties af an alderman are more flexible than most other jobs. My own disturbing conclusion is that Stone could serve as long as he wants.

He may actually be sincere when he says he has no intention to retire. He was once ready to retire, but then his life changed with the death of his wife and he decided to stay on. I don't want to be overly dramatic, but being alderman is his life. What else would he do?

Of course, the job still has its other appeals: power, money and influence. He certainly seems to enjoy those. Why give them away? Ilana's there for the day-to-day work and Stone remains the power broker and deal maker. If it works, why change it?

Alderman Feketitsch may be a dream that will never come true, a nightmare we may never have to face.

If Stone does step down, he'll want to do it as late in his final term as possible. He may be able to hand over his seat as alderman, but Ilana won't inherit his position as vice-mayor and chair of the building committee. More important, she won't inherit the money and power those positions provide.

No matter how late in the term she's appointed, Ilana will still have certain advantages of an incumbent, including the money from her father's campaign committee, which would no doubt be transferred to her committee. Unusual mid-term fundraising could be a sign of Stone's imminent retirement.

Of course, for any of this to matter Berny first needs to get himself re-elected. Whatever he'd like us to believe, that's no "done deal".

>If it works, why change it?

It doesn't work. Many years ago it may have worked but it doesn't now. The eagerness of youth (Dolar)makes the proposed changes for the 50th ward too tempting to pass up for anyone who cares about his/her community. It's very simple. Just get out and vote.

TO Anonymous on the medical examiner post. I have heard Stone say in the past they will carry me out of City Hall on a stretcher just like Harold Washington. Stone has the love for his job and the people. Most of the posts I see here are anti Stone. People, who don’t go to see him, people who believe in lies from dolar, which started from day1. I live in the ward for 30 years now all of a sudden its 26. Lets get the story straight. I have a plan. We all have plans. Do they always work?? We can promise the world, but can we keep our promise in the long run. Never a guarantee. I believe Stone has done a great job serving our community and we cannot please everyone. The vote totals show that and April 17 will show it again. GO Bernie!!

I believe you are rite on the money about willow9. I have recently went thru some of the blogs, this dog fight as well as the reader, and most of the posts are very vindictive from willow9, directed toward stone and his family. I wonder if she truly believes dolar can really do a better job than Stone. I have seen a comment from willow9 hoping the site will stay open because it is a place for her to vent. I think this person needs help, possibly psychotherapy.

This is me venting....I want a fresh, energetic, concerned new alderman. I want an alderman who doesn't lie about his (non-existant) involvement in keeping Thillens stadium open. I want an alderman who doesn't take political donations from thieves, and finishes what he starts(ie:bike path). I want an alderman who does not practice nepotism. I want an alderman who does not pretend to be the victim of a hate crime and then pretend that there is little crime in his ward. I want an alderman who is awake, and can think on his feet, not one who has to prepare and plan for every move he makes. I want an alderman that takes pride in his ward by caring enough to step up to the task of keeping it clean.
I want an alderman who shows some class and practices self control and never uses profanity in public, because that same alderman represents my neighbors and me, and we don't like to be embarassed.
The help I need is only going to come from the community, when they finally vote the BS out.

The question here is simply this: Do we want our ward to continue along the corrupt paths of cronism? Do we want to retain an alderman whose supporters have resorted to bigotry and fear in making the case for his re-election? Isn't it time the 50th ward reject the politics of special priviledge, the machine traditions of a James Michael Curley, and move forward into the Progressive Era that somehow escaped Illinois a century ago? We need to replace Curleyism for the idealism of a Teddy Roosevelt, for the New Deal his cousin Franklin brought to America in the depths of the depression, and to plant that tree of hope that Henry Wallace spoke about during his quixotic run for the presidency in 1948. A vote for Naisy Dolar is a vote to restore democracy and responsible government to the 50th ward and to live up to authentic American values that Stone and his supporters apparently never mastered. That is what is at stake here. That is why Naisy Dolar must win. Together let us drive Stone and his moneychangers from the Temple of City Government!

"I wonder if [willow9] truly believes dolar can really do a better job than Stone."

I believe Dolar can do better. I believe I've already seen her act the better alderman than Stone. In response to the recent Emmerson Park beatings, both Stone and Dolar held press conferences. At his, Stone and his friendly neighborhood talking heads preferred to label any local violence "isolated" rather than condemn it harshly and take steps to prevent it. The victims of the beating were asking for cameras; Stone and other local authorities said no - only temporary stepped-up patrols.

While Stone was doing only as much as necessary to fend off bad PR, at her press conference Dolar offered affirmative, fresh action-taking solutions to help prevent such problems in the future.

The press conference she held sounded much more like what I want to hear from "my alderman" than what we heard from the actual alderman!

I never saw Daisy hold a press conference, she wasn’t on TV, nor did I hear any proposal. I watched the news that night and saw our alderman and the Police Commander. Both said this was an isolated incident. It was nice that a person helped another but she should have kept her mouth closed after that, this is what transpired after. "I can't believe you did this. You are all crazy," Denwiddie said she reprimanded the teens. Her remarks, she said, provoked an attack. Than attack might have been avoided. OK another way for dolar to try to boost her campaign; what else does she have to go on. Seems to me this was staged at the alderman’s office for dolar to get a little publicity since she is a no name

I believe breaking up the fight was a heroic thing but to go as far as reprimanding them to the point of provoking them could have been avoided.. If you watched the news, look at the couple. They looked like a couple of gang bangers themselves. Both the husband and wife had a mouth on them that could have kept up with any gang banger. I don’t condone what happened in the park but again the final outcome could have been avoided since they got the girl out and she ran away.

I'm always amused by the "outsiders" or "reformers" who talk big and do so with such venom. They specialize in ad hominem attacks that are short on substance but full of accusations. Do you honestly believe that people who talk like that will be open, honest, and welcoming for all? The so-called "cure" will likely be worse than the diesease.

I've yet to hear from them one single good meaningful and thoughtful reason to vote against Stone. Oh I've heard lots of invective, lots of anti-senior bias, and lots of Ilana bashing, but nothing of any substance.

Sorry, but Stone is still the best choice for the 50th.

End the Stone Age!

A lot of anonymous posters state they need a reason to vote for Stone. Here's one for thought:

-crumbling streets

Oh, here is another one:

-dirty streets

Oh, and wait, here is another one:

-UNSAFE streets

Oh, wait, wait, I think I thought of another one:

-The fact that given the above three he didn't spend a single cent of the roughly 1.3 million dollars the ward gets to fix our ward.

And lastly:

- We NEED economic development - Stone doesn't do ANYTHING. HE fills empty store fronts with his campaign signs.

Oh wait, one more:

WE NEED A NEW SCHOOL. Stone has been dragging his feet on this issue for years.

END THE STONE AGE! On April 17th vote Naisy Dolar!

The #1 Good Meaningful Theoughtful Reason NOT to Vote for Stone:

Stone is Weak on Corruption

Bribery, patronage and corruption are life & death issues. Just ask Rev. Willis or Mrs. Ramirez.

Bribery, patronage and corruption are pocketbook issues if you are a taxpayer.

Stone completely abdicates his oversight role in City Hall. Stone is an unidicted co-conspirator in each and every City Hall scandal.

On the school issue the fact of the matter is that Stone has been promising a new school for many years now. In past elections he has failed to deliver. Instead of a new school, all we got was empty promises.

I don't want empty promises for this community. That practice needs to end. My hope is that Naisy will deliver.
