Stone Refuses to Debate
As expected, Ald. Stone has refused to participate in the debate previously announced. Stone's fear of debating his opponents is widely known, so this cannot be considered a surprise.

“In boxing the challenger meets the champion in the ring and they fight it out,” he said. “If there’s another challenger, he meets the champion in the ring. I'm betting his excuse will be "Does the heavyweight fight the featherweight? Of course not you S.O.B.'s!

I know, it's a surprise. If you were napping. Maybe it surprised a sleeping Stone!
Stone probably thought the format was going to be more like Avy Meyers' show.
They should still have the "debate." Naisy on one side of the stage and a chair with a picture of "sleeping Bernie" in the other. Perhaps they could play a recording of someone snoring in response to each question put to Stone. He deserves no better for this cowardly behavior.
In announcing Stone's not-too-surprising decision to not participate in WRPCO's candidates forum, Michael Moses made an interesting claim that has so far been ignored: "Alderman Stone will instead participate in a debate co-sponsored by three or four local community groups in April to be announced."
Has Naisy been invited to this alternate debate? Does the 50th Ward even have three or four other community groups to sponsor such an event? And when in April will this debate take place? I'm sure Stone would prefer sometime after the 17th.
About the "debate":
Would it be right after passover? That would leave less than a week between the end of passover and the election. I can't imagine it being during passover, I guess only Stone knows.

Anon, Anon, Anon, I don't hate anybody. I am deeply disappointed in the performance and incompetence of my elected alderman. I have witnessed first hand his inability to do the job, and I am exercising my freedom of speech to point this out.
Many people of Stone's age perform admirably, even in tougher settings. The stark reality is that Ald. Stone cannot. Perhaps he is just lazy. Perhaps he is exceedingly negligent. The nicest way to put it is that he is old. I am not a witness to whether Stone is lazy or negligent. But his appearance in person, on television, and on his campaign literature makes it obvious that Stone is old and in frail health. Even so, Stone himself made age an issue when he put it out there that Age = Wisdom. Only a hypocrite would criticize people for judging Stone on a characteristic that he has asked us to judge him.
That you believe that Stone's mind is sharp only tells me that you have much lower standards for mental acuity than I. I have witnessed Stone ramble through a speech. I have seen those CAN-TV appearances where Stone could only be described as bewildered. Perhaps Ald. Stone was never that sharp, but I seem to remember otherwise. You could argue, if you like, that his thought process was always this bad. I tend to give him the benefit of the doubt here. I don't believe that Stone has always been this bad. Again, I rely on my own memory.
The contention that Stone works long hours is laughable. Again, I am a witness. He's fallen asleep so often that people take note when he doesn't! I've seen him fall asleep while Jan was speaking, when Ira was talking, when Lou was speaking, I've even seen him fall asleep when the Mayor was addressing us! I've seen Stone fall asleep in the afternoon, I've seen him nap before noon. I suppose that if you count his frequent naps as working, and maybe HE DOES, then you might have a point. I don't. Frankly, I see no evidence that he does much work at all.
My experience with his staff also leads me to a different conclusion. They are clearly patronage workers who think they don't need to work at all! Highly competent? Only at stealing from we taxpayers. If they were competent, you wouldn't hear so many complaints about cracked sidewalks, broken curbs, felled trees, or all the trash that swirls around the ward. If they were competent, we would need an SSA for Devon.
If there were a crisis, you can be sure that Dick Mell or Ed Burke would be the ones in charge, not Berny Stone. Personally, I doubt Stone would even be in the mix. And I doubt his Vice-Mayoral status would last more than a couple of days. He's irrelevant in city politics.
None of this should be interpreted that I hate Ald. Stone. He's just not up to the job anymore.

I use my observations and experience to find the truth, capsman. You, on the other hand, have nothing but angry words. Stone works hard? Why does he need so much sleep? You would think that if Stone wanted to show that he was a hard worker he would find time to sleep sometime when he's not on the public dime! The facts betray you. It's simple to conclude that Stone is not up to the job, just go watch him! The fact that he won't debate only reinforces my point.
