Fireworks from Grant Park last night

Consider this a Summer Open Thread. What are your plans for the summer? What's going on around your neighborhood? Are you have a block party? How did your block party go?

We're (SWMBO and I) headed up to Wisconsin this summer. Looking forward to it.

Sues blogger for "business interference", wins $7500
Lee Kaplan, a journalist who writes on Middle East controversies for (among other outlets) David Horowitz's conservative Front Page, attracted the critical interest of a Berkeley student named Yaman Salahi, who set up a blog entitled Lee Kaplan Watch that assails Kaplan and his work. Kaplan proceeded to sue Salahi on charges of "business interference" in small claims court, a venue lacking in the extensive fact-finding and procedural protections that would attach to a conventional suit for, say, defamation. Last month the court awarded Kaplan $7500. The blogosphere has begun to notice the story with some alarm: Seeing the Forest for the Trees, Dean's World, Ann Althouse, Slashdot. More links: Media Law Resource Center. Kaplan's side of the story is here.

What out Hugh and JS for lawsuits

Political speech is constitutionally protected. Commercial speech may not be (if this verdict holds). Lee Kaplan is not a public (political) figure. Ald. Stone is, or at least pretends to be. We assume that Stone had at least one constitutional law course when he was in law school.

If there were to be a law suit, a "blog warning" would not precede it. I do not believe Hugh and Jay care about any threats from a blogger, but you anon 317, certainly want to believe they do.
Keep posting Jay, I enjoy reading the news.

It's an interesting idea. I'm sure Stone could make a good case for "business interference". But when your business is shady deals and shakedowns, you might not want to make a big fuss in public.

I'm just curious as to why Ald Stone & his supporters feel so threatened by this blog and the fact that half of voters in the 50th aren't with them? I mean why litigate over a blog?

I suspect that they got used to conducting their business in private (secret) and don't want someone to shine a little light on them. The one thing that Hugh and I have in common (and I don't think Hugh is really posting anymore) is that we want to bring 50th Ward politics and governance into the sunshine.

One of the biggest reasons why I started this blog was because I can remember all the disgusting things that Stone and his supporters would say about his opponents - mostly in private (secret). I wanted those things to be known to everyone, before the election, not afterward. People have confused my desire to see the whispers reported with a belief that they are true. Generally, the whispered stuff isn't true, not even close.

This is actually an ongoing pyschological experiment where items are posted( with comments) and we see the reaction of the test subjects.

Sincerely

I'm enjoying the summer by driving out to Illinois' best kept secret on weekends. The huge Marengo City Park with its Nature Center, big picnic areas, amazing pool with waterslide, and few patrons. It's worth the trip.

I got a better I dead, I will offer your $3.95 to buy your blog? It is easier than a hostile take over.
