Open Thread: Why Won't Stone Debate?

One commenter asks, "why won't Alderman Stone participate in a real debate?" This is your chance to answer the question. Why do you think Berny Stone is afraid to debate an opponent, despite his promise to do so?

How is the April 12 forum not a real debate? Why is the 3/21 forum a real debate.

Answer: He's having an easier time calling the media for another round of the "look at me, I'm the victim of another hate crime". It doesn't require much to have the media show up or call, ask him some questions and then leave. No one questions his agenda so instead of defending himself, he thinks people (the dumb ones) perceive him as "victim", and offer sympathy votes. This seems to be his favorite roll.

What agenda do you have willow9?

Anonymous: I don't see either forum as qualifying as a "real debate." If the Wednesday forum isn't impartial, then the April 12 forum can't be considered impartial, either.

But the Stone proposal doesn't even rise to the perception of debate. It is a joint press conference, where the audience doubles as the press. It isn't well thought out, as Greg Brewer points out.

The question is, what is Ald. Stone afraid of? His supporters claim that he's doing a wonderful job, works long hours, and is a powerful and influential member of the Daley team. If any of this is true, you would think Stone would take every opportunity to demonstrate this to the community. Instead, he hides in his tower. If you ask him a difficult question, you are likely to be belittled and attacked. This is not the behavior of a competent or confident person. It is the behavior of a weak coward. And it makes you wonder why the reality is so different than the image that Stone's sycophants try to project.

Stone would not fare well in any debate, no matter what the format. But I'm not sure it's accurate to say he's afraid. Only the challenger has anything to gain from a debate, so why should Stone participate? Arguments for participatory, open, accountable government don't count. I mean, strategically, why should he participate? He has nothing to gain by getting in and nothing to lose by staying out. Joe Moore debated his challengers, but Joe Moore has a progressive image and would have suffered by not participating. Stone has no such image to protect and he has no desire to put himself in any situation he can't control. Stone is no consensus builder. He doesn't win people over by persuading them. He co-opts and maniputates them--a carrot in one hand, a stick in the other.

How is the April 12 forum not a real debate? Because it will never happen. It's just a delaying tactic, a diversion. It's like introducing an alternate living wage ordinance that no one will ever consider. It's like introducing a zoning change requested by a neighborhood group, but losing it in committee forever. It's like negotiating a TIF oversight board without ever putting anything in writing. Should I go on?

Stone will not debate.

The only one who needs sympathy here is you. You are a person of shame and truly needs help. I hope after the election you seek help, not that you shouldnt have sought help already. This blog will too end as the election and you will need to vent , maybe in a 8x8 enclosed room if you dont get help!!.

Yeah, what is he afraid of?

A legislator of 4 decades experience, his oratorical skills honed by debating the critical issues of our time EVERY DAY for LONG HOURS, taking on the best & the brightest of Chicago, Our City Council ...

... versus some wet-behind-the-ears chick from the 'hood.

You'd think Stone could do it half awake.

BAWK bawk bawk bawk BAWK!

for willow and everyone else's information -Stone didn't call the media-the media monitors POLICE -and the Media came the next day(YESTERDAY), ON THEIR OWN, after most of the OUTRAGE was painted over -CLEARLY,IT WAS,AND IS STONE'S DESIRE TO NOT INFLAME THE SITUATION.

Just this weekend, a ONE board member offered his observations of Stone at a meeting. According to this individual, Stone has attention deficit issues and problems recalling points. He actually needed help in completing sentences and complete thoughts. This individual summed it up that Stone is too fragile and needs a lot of assistance to handle the job of an alderman. It would be just as well if he stepped down and let others who are more capable to be accountable to the 50th Ward residents and to manage all the responsibilities of this position.

You mean after he hid the bellows, he had a staffer call the media.
Remember what happened to the boy who cried "wolf" (or do you), research it.

To anon. posted at 11:43:

Stone is the King of Inflammatory. His lies (as well as those of Avey Myers) recorded for posterity on the hideous Northtown News are proof enough.

It's easy for him to hide behind a video camera and chuckle along with Sonny and Avey, but a live audience of informed, intelligent ward residents asking non-rehearsed questions is too much to bear. What a surprise.

great stuff, hides a lot of sins with one coat, available at all local hardware stores and paint stores

of course if you WANT something to show trough, you can do that, too

Is WRPCO still going ahead with its faux forum? I saw a flyer in my neighborhood that listed both candidates. Under Stone's name it said "invited to appear". Shouldn't it also say "declined two weeks ago"? Unfortunately, this single-candidate "forum" only justifies Stone's reasons for not participating. Clearly, the group has its own agenda which is not compatible with hosting an impartial forum.

By one hand clapping's "logic" no public forums could ever be held, since Ald. Stone will turn them all down. At least the public still gets a chance to question their NEXT Alderman this way.

I realize the idea of being answerable to the public confuses Alderman Stone and his supporters no end....

At March 21, 2007 3:34 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I thought Stone has nothing to be afraid of. Apparently when you want to shine a light on Stone he runs and hides. Why doesn't he come to the forum and convince me why I should keep him in office for 4 more years (or 2 years and 1 day) .

hahaha I agree with willow9.

Now in a Runoff we see Stone claim that he's the victim of an even LARGER anti semitic act.

For shame Stone! WHo did it ? You or your daughter?

Jim said, "By one hand clapping's 'logic' no public forums could ever be held"

Unfortunately, Jim, that's correct. If an impartial group wants to host a forum but the candidates won't come, then there's no event. If a partisan group wants to host a political event, they can do it with or without candidates. That doesn't mean I don't believe politicians shouldn't be accountable or that candidates shouldn't hold rallies for their supporters. It just means we should understand what kind of event we're talking about.

I wasn't able to attend tonight, but I'm looking forward to the post-forum debate on this blog. Jim and others, please weigh in with your impressions of the event.

I attended the "forum" last night. It wasn't as packed as the 2/7 forum, I think most people want to see a real "debate". Of course Naisy showed up and talked about the issues and answered questions from the audience. My favorite two takeaways from last night were the framed picture of Stone that Naisy brought with her to remind the audience of who we are dealing with. This picture was not the "sleeping Berny" that many are familiar with. The other takeaway was the people who I thought were Stone voters and found out to the contrary.

Yes, the human mind is truly amazing. Can you imagine how much fun it would be if everyone wrote in the same garbled fashion as in your post? What if this were done on a worldwide basis. The people who translate documents would also have a fun time with it especially if our ancient ancestors had written this way. Do you think we should regress to grunting and yelling rather than using the queens english?

I guess dolar was too busy at a debate that wasnt happening when police and alderman were at a shooting that happened on Devon. We can see where dolars priority is.

"I guess dolar was too ... when police and alderman were at a shooting that happened on Devon."

What an amazingly stupid statement. "You say you care about crime, so why weren't you there when that guy pulled a gun?" I'm sure the police haven't yet started calling Naisy everytime there's an incident in the ward. She has to hear about it on the news like the rest of us.

For those of you who don't know what this is about, here's the story: Police fatally shoot man on Far North Side

Why would the alderman be at the crime scene? Was he with the shooter?

This was a example of how you put people down in general your a hater.I believe we are all human, and humans make mistakes. As I have said in a previous post you should not criticize people for not having the education that you MAY have?? Not pursuing their education, or for making mistakes in general. That’s part of life. I don’t see that same garbled fashion in any post this was just a sample of really poor writing to say the least.

Why Won't Stone Debate

When Stone thinks about debating Dolar, it brings back hazy memories of 1956, when Esther Saperstein kicked his ass!

And he can't help thinking back to 1988, when Carol Moseley Braun opened a can of whoop-ass on him!

Stone looks at Naisy, he thinks,

OH NO! NOT AGAIN!
