Blind Men in the Dark
I was asked yesterday who I thought would win. Who knows? What I see right now is two inept politicians tumbling towards April 17th.
The fact that the Stone camp did not meet with the Mayor last week is a sign. I just don't know what it means. Ald. Stone remains a recepient of the largese being generated by the Mayor's PAC, but does not appear to benefit from the Mayor's advice or troops.
For most other incumbents who had gotten 48% of the vote, this probably wouldn't matter. But this is Berny Stone, who seems to be stuck in the 1970s. It doesn't help that he's been distracted by family problems throughout the campaign. But the faux break-in? Anti-semitic slurs in a Phillipine tongue? That is incredible. NO ONE BELIEVES THAT! There is no clearer indication that Stone and his supporters are behind the recent rash of anti-semitic activity than this. And it is increasingly clear that if you want to calm racial tensions in the community, the defeat of Ald. Stone will guarantee it. Stone and his sycophants are evidently stoking racial tensions, and if Stone loses, they will disappear.
Re-electing Stone only guarantees that they will continue. Imagine what Ilana will do with the knowledge that race-baiting tactics work!
Naisy Dolar looks like she wants to be voted off the island. Anti-semiticism is wrong, and hate crimes should be treated as that, a crime. But Dolar has been acting more like a human rights advocate than a candidate. Not only has she been reacting to Stone's faked appeals, but by elevating them to this stature, she lends her credibility to these anti-semitic acts. Dolar let Stone play the victim, and squashed her own efforts to highlight criminal incidents that cast a poor light on the alderman.
Add to that the spectacle of last night. A group that cast off any thought of impartiality held its candidate forum even though it knew that only one candidate would show up. This legitimized the forum that Stone has put together, without any thought of impartiality. Voters in our community who were interested in a real give-and-take between the two candidates are the real losers here. Stone comes out a winner, since he still gets to dictate the terms of debate in the ward.
Over all, this week only solidified the inherent advantages that Stone brought into the run-off. Early voting begins next week, and these advantages will become more clear. When it is all over, and Dolar is wondering why she lost, she can look to this week as decisive. She started with elevated hopes, raising money and a publicized crime that played right into her themes. And then she relinquished control of the campaign. Hard to see how she can recover the momentum, especially as long as the spectre of anti-semiticism is out there.

Who says you can't teach an old Stone new tricks? Stone has managed to improve a tried-and-true tactic. When he mailed himself his defaced literature, he called a City Hall press conference. No one really believed it and it dropped out of the news cycle before the 10 o'clock news. This time he downplayed the incident and doesn't want to talk about it. Not publicly, anyway. Stone doesn't need this on tv or in the papers. It will be the subject of numerous small meetings and private conversations. "Jewish life in the 50th ward is threatened. We must protect our alderman. He's done so much for us. He deserves our loyalty."
Yes, they painted over the offense Monday morning, but its payoff is quietly building.
Re: WRPCO Forum
Did Naisy Dolar answer the prepared questions and questions selected from the audience or did she talk about what she wanted? Did Thom Clark of the Community Media Workshop moderate the one-candidate forum? Did the not-for-profit Organization of the Northeast co-sponsor an event supporting one candidate in the race? For more information, call (773) 761-8274.
Why all this concern about meeting with Daley? Maybe, just maybe, the Mayor feels that Stone is capable of winning this race without Da Mayor's troops, etc.
And who even said da Mayor isnt helping??
I don't know who your sources are, but believe me, 50 is one of several races I'm really worried about. You can bet I've got people up there taking care of Berny. And I don't mean his doctors, I mean serious political people.
While no one believes the Mayor reads this (or any) blog, you completely lost your credibility when you mentioned "serious political people." Come on!
Jay must have taken too long writing today's post. He started with this in the first paragraph: "I was asked yesterday who I thought would win. Who knows?", but ended up here by the last: "When it is all over, and Dolar is wondering why she lost ..."
Hasn't Naisy been constantly playing her race card?
Her yellow caps are a not-so-subtle signal to her fellow Phillipinos that this is a tribal thing.
Yellow was Corazon Aquino's celebrated color when she wrested control from Marcos in the Phillipines in the 80's.
She's been taking scads of money from out-of-state Asian groups. What could be there interest in Chicago's 50th ward?
I think Naisy has handled the situation admirably. It was important that she denounce the racist vandalism, even if it was Stone supporters' own doing, which I strongly believe.

Hey do you have any proof that Stone's own supports did it.. if so put up or shut up... if you have any prrofthat Stone Supports stole Dolar's signs put up or shut up...
Naisys colors are blue and yellow. Like the blue on the Dolar yard signs that Stone has recently copied. Thats the reason that so many Dolar yard signs were stolen; they wanted to get the color just right.
Even in the first round of the Aldermanic election, the Stone campaign was quick to resort to fear tactics. One Stone operative told people at my synagogue that Jews, like myself, who supported Stone's opponents were voting to "destroy the community."
Many of my neighbors who are supporting Stone admit he is corrupt and a divider but feel they have a religious obligation to support him. This is the real problem and I hope Naisy Dolar can recover from these almost tribal attitudes that could put Stone over the top.
Of course Naisy is equally problematic with all of the support she has garnered from outside Asian-American groups. It just goes to show how right Theodore Roosevelt was when he condemned "hyphenated Americanism" a century ago.
Mission Impossible: Get Stone to appear next to Naisy in a debate.

I don't like Berny Stone, either. He uses his Jewishness when it is convenient and opportune for him to do so. The rest of the time he is a terrible Jew. Much of what he says is lashon hara. He treats people terribly.

I happen to know the Stone has done wonderful things to help out a Jewish social services agency here in WRP when it had some problems with the city.

just a couple of thoughts...
yellow is the color of Stone's chicken feathers
BAWK bawk bawk bawk BAWK!
Jay,
The rumor is that you are behind the hate crime at Alderman Stone's office. I've heard that the suspect is a 46 years old Jewish computer hacker and teacher who runs a blog in the 50th ward. What do you say?
Alexi
To alexi:
You should tell Jay WHICH hate crime you are referring to. Crime in the 50th is hard to keep track of lately.
Willow9 you could be the next suspect with all the trash you write.
Willow9 do you know how to read it does say!!
Dolar in trouble !!
Honda fund raiser a flop,20 some people show. Goes to show where the money comes from not here in Chicago.
> Stone comes out a winner, since he still gets to dictate the terms of debate in the ward.
This is an odd admission from a blogger.
Stone doesn't get to dictate anything. Stone is about to learn just how little in control he is.
The debate in the ward goes on with or without Stone. If he will not present himself to his constituents, we will. Stone can run but he can't hide from a 34 year voting record and 3 decades of never passing by a live mike or an uncapped reporter's pen.
Why not be a part of it? Allow me to suggest laying off commenting on the the campaign and focusing on Stone and the issues. Seek out Stone's own words and write your reaction to them.
What is really something to behold is the level of obsessive, hatred motivated "bone chewing"by Hugh.I have observed these various sites RE:50th Ward for months and one common denominator is HUGH'S STONE BASHING.The slanders, innuendo, and SPIN Hugh posts SERIALLY and on MULTI-SITES is intended to create a false image in people's minds.HUGH is an ANTI-INCUMBENT(ANY INCUMBENT)FANATIC who has one OVER-RIDING AGENDA-to attack any and all incumbents, including 49th Ward ALD. MOORE. DO NOT LET HUGH DECEIVE YOU!
The same could be said of Willow9-Willow,a.k.a. Wendy, has the same HATRED-MOTIVATED Anti-Stone Obsession as Hugh, but she's a CHEAP IMITATION.She uses her neighbor's campaign as her PRIVATE VEHICLE TO ATTACK STONE AND HIS FAMILY--to know that a Hugh and a Wendy live amongst us is a horrible realization-HUGH and WENDY ARE THE NEIGHBORS FROM HELL-
To: blah blah blah blah,
HUGH and WENDY ARE THE NEIGHBORS FROM HELL-
...or perhaps they are just two neighbors who are disgusted with Stone and his serfdom attitude,
...or perhaps they are the neighbors least likely to be intimidated by Stones "supports",
...or perhaps the research done on Stone's history and the undeniable FACTS that are linked here for anybody who can point and click are making the cronies just a little bit nervous....
I could go on responding to your unintelligent(read: stupid) ramblings, but I want to get some more research in before the "debate".
To willow9
YOU said it (JUST 2 NEIGHBORS)the same 2 idiots who keep rambling about the same crap which you cant back up.The same 2 who are on every blog. How many people actually read your crap?? Your a JOKE. Oh I forgot to mention Jay the three of you. April 17th will be here soon and Willow9 I hope you thought about getting help before its too late the box is getting smaller.I hate to see people loose their mind which I cant say there is much help left for you.
> the same crap which you cant back up
I'm a lot more likely to link to my sources than you.
Do you know how to do a link?
Hugh
Link to the pictures of your house. I am sure people would Love to see the rotten shape it’s in. You have no room to talk on how our ward is when you can't even maintain your own property. What a pitiful person you are with no room to talk. You should be reported to 311, but then if someone comes out it’s the alderman after you!!! LOL
LINK that up
I was "greatly inspired" by the new Stone Lawn Signs, covering Northern Boundary, to get out and vote for Naisy Dolar tomorrow when Early Voting opens up!
Some casual observations from Devon Ave. Sunday afternoon:
Ten men in front of the Mesopotamia club smoking and talking.
Devon avenue seems...cleaner.
Thillens sign reads: Cubs field at Thillens part of the Chicago Park District
The only things indicative of an election about to take place are the strange cleanliness of Devon Ave. and the multitude of Stone signs in peoples storefronts.
Looks like the people of Devon are for Stone, and Devon is truly clean Not durty as Naisy says. LOL
I guess you saw it for yourself.
